Hope Muir is appointed as the new artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada.

The Toronto Star

Quote

Muir was raised in Etobicoke by a single mom who put her into dance classes at an early age as an outlet for her daughter’s superabundant energy. Muir admits she found ballet boring at first and turned to tap and jazz dance. By the time her mother’s job took her to London, England, in 1987, Muir had begun to foresee a future in classical ballet.

The announcement might send bemused dance fans straight to Google, hoping to put a face – and, moreover, a biography – to the name. Muir, who has spent the past four years as artistic director of the Charlotte Ballet in North Carolina, is not a well-known personage in the ballet world, let alone a household name in Canadian arts. The appointment marks a change of tack from Kain, who came to the role in 2005 as the luminary Canadian ballerina of her generation, lauded by critics and audiences the world over and admired beyond ballet stages by icons like Andy Warhol.

During her time as artistic director, Muir says she would like to continue creating a supportive environment that promotes equity, tour internationally with the company in support of Canadian creativity and nurture young talents along the way.

"I hope to mentor some new, exciting voices choreographically, either from within the company or Canada at large," she said.
