Toledo Ballet presents a Shakespeare-themed ballet.

Kansas City Ballet performs at the Topeka Zoo.

“We have the partnership with the zoo to bring this very unique ballet called carnival of the animals as a part of the awaken the sense program at the zoo to celebrate I believe its the re-launch of the Japanese gardens here,” said director, Stephanie Heston.

The Carnival of Animals marked the Kansas Ballet’s first public performances since the pandemic.

As in Ashton’s “Symphonic Variations,” made the year before, the arrangement of dancers and use of the upper body suggest classical sculpture and architecture. A woman, Victoria Hulland, is partnered by two men, Ricardo Rhodes and Daniel Pratt. They represent a balance of forces, equilibrium and interdependence, a very Ashtonian theme. They and the rest of the cast give a polished performance, but one that lacks expansiveness.
