Before moving to New Zealand, Gnatt had built an impressive resume. He graduated into the Royal Danish Ballet in 1939 with his sister Kirsten Ralov. During World War II, while still with the company, he joined a resistance movement to help British special operations parachutists find safe havens in German-occupied Denmark.
