Culture wars at the Paris Opera Ballet.

The controversy is pitting Alexander Neef, the German director of Paris Opera, which includes the ballet company, against traditionalists aghast at what they see as his attempt to convert a national institution into a temple of North American thinking. Neef, 46, spent much of his career in Canada.
