A review of the Royal Ballet by Sarah Crompton in The Guardian.

A version of the mixed bill, with a different cast, was performed for an audience at the Royal Opera House as lockdown fell. This particular programme, livestreamed from an empty ROH a week later, is available online until 13 December – incredible value at £10, because it shows a company in refined form and fighting fettle. Other duet highlights include a breezy Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux from Marcelino Sambé and Anna Rose O’Sullivan that oozes joy and technical bravura; an emotional Swan Lake from Francesca Hayward and César Corrales; and an interpretation of Cathy Marston’s In Our Wishes from Romany Pajdak and Calvin Richardson that revealed the emotional turmoil beneath the steps.

The Sarasota Ballet presents an all-Balanchine program.

Unfortunately, for this program the company couldn’t really tap into the depth of that stable, due to the need to limit the lineup to mostly brief solos, pas de deux and small ensembles excerpts, chosen to minimize risk to dancers and staff during the pandemic. Though it is varied stylistically, performed with polish and expertly filmed, because the presentation lacks a single meaty entry, it has an aura of a “greatest hits” gala fundraiser.

The Goh Ballet presents a Nutcracker on film.

She then contacted a Los Angeles-based writer to collaborate on the script. Goh wanted the story to reflect the difficult times people have been living through during the pandemic. The narrative they developed follows a young dancer who spends winter alone during the pandemic, but is reunited with his passion for ballet.
