San Francisco Opera is holding a Ring Festival from March 5-30, mostly from Fri-Sun.   There are paid Zoom presentations throughout, but streaming of the HD filiming is going to be free!  This is before they plan to go back to live performances starting in April:

https://www.sfcv.org/music-news/sf-opera-revisits-wagners-ring-and-inaugurates-live-drive-in-opera

Four weekends in March:

March 7-8, Das Rheingold

March 14-15: Die Walkure

March 21-22: Siegfried

March 28-29: Die Gotterdammerung

It is Francesca Zambello's production, originally from 2011 or 2012.  It was supposed to be shared with other companies, but at least one fell through.  It is a fantastic production -- I saw it live when it premiered in SF and then again in 2018, when it was filmed.

I know another soprano was supposed to sing Brunnhilde, but I couldn't have been more thrilled with Irene Thoerin's performance.  She sang Brunnhilde beautifully in the Copenhagen Ring from the mid-00's; that performance is on DVD.  And there was luxury casting, like Brandon Jovanovich as Froh as well as Siegmund.

Passes to the Zoom presentations are $99 or $69 for people who are $75+ supporters.  That $75 was the best value during the COVID-19 crisis, as the free streams were on demand from the valut for the season, at least the ones aired so far.  The first few months it launched was a Patricia Racette festival for the ages.  Individual sessions are $15.00 each.

I hadn't realized that package-holders to the San Francisco Ring content would get access to archived presentations for quite this long:  today's opening Zoom presentation is available through May 2.

My favorite part of the Q&A was when the panel members were asked what they think would have happened if [insert plot change].

Rossini at the Drive-In, as San Francisco Opera Returns

Honks instead of applause: An open-air “Barber of Seville” brought the company back after 16 months.

San Diego Opera’s parking-lot production of “The Barber of Seville” expands beyond the outdoor stage...

Colorful ‘Barber of Seville’ and pandemic-inspired concert are upbeat and technically well-produced

For World Opera Day, Bard's Fisher Center is offering a video-on-demand stream of its production of Ernest Chausson's King Arthur on a pay-what-you-want basis (including $0) from 10/25/2021- 11/01/2021.

I haven't watched this one yet, but Bard's opera productions are usually very good and typically explore less well known corners of the repertoire

by Ernest Chausson
The American Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Leon Botstein
Directed by Louisa Proske
