2020: Free Streaming during COVID-19 Crisis

Recommended Posts

There is a technical bobble at the end there; not only in the video, but I believe the curtain is just a bit early, too.  Luckily, in spite of those, we do see and hear, in sync, the ballet, right to the curtain, if not through the last notes:  The final pose, with the three boys on one knee.

And what a performance!  To everybody's credit, including Sandra Jennings and her two assistants, identified in the credits below the video window as the people who staged it.  I'm grateful for this.

Something about the photo of Topia reminds me of Monotones. And which makes me wish Sarasota Ballet would post a video of their Monotones, as they did it a few years ago at the Joyce, with piano accompaniment.

I think this was kept public by mistake, so enjoy while you can:

Thanks for posting this, Dale! I gather it was posted by NYPL. If they really don't know it's online, I wonder how long it will take them to take it down, now that they know we know.

Emeralds was buffering at the exact same places all three times I watched. It could be that the memory in my computer is causing this, or it could be the feed.

<sigh> Yes, that's always a risk. I hesitate posting these. It's been up for a bit and I weighed the good of people seeing it. I think it was posted by the production company.

For those who were disappointed by Lincoln Center suddenly, indefinitely postponing various dance week offerings, they have done the same with their theater offering.  The stream of Carousel that was supposed to be begin tonight was yanked, to be presented at some unspecified future time.

Also tonight (7:30 to 8:30), the Metropolitan Museum of Art will show a performance by Silas Farley of NYC Ballet and a group of dancers, including Taylor Stanley, in multiple galleries. Farley choreographed. Check Events at the Met Museum website. I don't know how long it will be up.

New York City Ballet's Coppelia has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 6.

Anyone watching NYCB Coppelia?  It's not listed on LC website nor its YT page.

I'm watching Creole Giselle, which I had seen many years ago. In the chatroom they say this will only be on-line until tomorrow.

Cynthia Harvey and Virginia Johnson are both in the chatroom!

Here's the direct link:

In one of these places, it's said - as California wrote while I was posting - the video - actually, available on Vimeo as well as on YouTube - will be available until 11:59 PM Eastern time Sunday, June 7.

Personally, I think it's appropriate for various presenters to shuffle their original schedules in light of our current tragic circumstances, to give more prominence to Black performers (though I agree that they might better have made some announcements).  In connection with the Dance Theater of Harlem, shown here, I recall that one of the founders, Arthur Mitchell, was motivated to do so by his circumstances:  Deeply saddened by the shooting of Dr. King in Memphis in 1968, Mitchell wanted to do something affirmative, resulting a year later in the founding of DTH; and here is some of that affirmation.

I’ve watched the first fifteen minutes (approx), the Duet at 1:12:30 and hope to be able to see it all. I’m enjoying it very much, especially the charming performance of Virginia Johnson as Giselle.

“Creole Giselle” — Dance Theatre of Harlem

I’m having a really nice time with this one. I’ve watched it once and am a third of the way through again. It might only remain on today, so I highly recommend watching it.

Why ?

From today’s partial viewing :

Virginia Johnson -- Giselle  😊

Very fine performing by Everyone !

Highly successful blending of cultural differences makes it a one of a kind.

Imagery, settings, atmosphere, aura as important as the performance

Broadway Musical Feel — Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma, Carousel — Jacques D’Amboise

Beautiful sets and costumes — Evoke the Bayou and Southern Elegance

Nobility from the Streets of Harlem — Southern Hospitality

Giselle feels sorry for the birds that Hilarion has hunted down for her.

Aristocratic elegance, sitcom element, authenticity, charm and loveliness, personality

And briefly from yesterday’s Act II :

Subtle nuances — Bournonville hand positioning used once by Giselle (a thank you to the Danish filming of the performance or just a coincidence?)

Willis’ gowns — Greek goddess-like sensuality.

Virginia Johnson's Greek goddess-like dancing and overall loveliness.

And now back to viewing.

What a groundbreaking and amazing production! (I only knew of Creole Giselle from books and photos.) Ms Johnson was sublime. Ms Graves commanding and effortless. The whole company was magnificent (loved all the children in act 1). Costumes and sets stunning. The orchestra excellent. This version featured the most emotional act 2 I've seen; Giselle repeatedly pleading for Albert's life, even weeping at one point.  I was breathless. BRAVO DTH!!!

Agree, almost completely.

Thanks kbarber for the good news.

The number of views of this video has almost doubled in one day to about 10,000.

From Dance Theatre of Harlem:

Twitter

We were so moved by the impact Creole Giselle has had on so many of you, we’ve decided to extend the streaming time on our YouTube channel until 11:59pm EDT on Wednesday, June 10th.

Our DTH on Demand streaming of Creole Giselle inspired this young dancer, from the Natalia Johnson Conservatory in California, to dress up and watch! This is such a beautiful display of why representation matters! Thank you for encouraging us with this beautiful photo. Keep dancing! We are so proud of you!

The Live from Lincoln Center broadcasts of the 1978 NYCB Coppelia and the 1983 Tribute to Balanchine have lately been re-scheduled for Monday, June 22nd and June 29th, respectively, at 8:00 PM eastern time:

http://lincolncenter.org/lincoln-center-at-home/series/live-from-lincoln-center

I'm looking forward to seeing these at last, especially to the second program, for Mozartiana, with Suzanne Farrell, Victor Castelli, and Ib Andersen.

Evidently the 1986 Balanchine A Midsummer Night's Dream continues to be available there.

I wasn't' really sure where to put this item, but...

The Worldwide Ballet Class has broadcast a couple of Martha Graham technique classes. Big difference no. 1: all the movements are performed on the floor.   ;)

Intro to Graham Technique for Ballet Dancers with Kathleen Dahlhoff,  Class 1
[Note that it is difficult to hear Dahlhoff in the very beginning, but once the class begins her audio is fine]

I haven't had a chance to watch either of these videos yet, but I thought some BalletAlerters might be interested.

First, there's a Works & Process video from the Guggenheim with choreography by Josh Bergasse performed by Sara Mearns as part of their virtual commissions series:

Then, there is a discussion with Bergasse as part of BSC@Home (Barrington Stage):
