2020: Free Streaming during COVID-19 Crisis

Recommended Posts

There are a number of threads across the site that have links to free streaming during the COVID-19 crisis.  I created this thread to start putting them in one place to reference.

I just learned that the Zurich opera house is making free streams available each weekend starting March 27 through June.  Several are performances by the ballet company, with choreography by Christian Spuck:

  • April 5-10 (the only extended run):  Verdi Requiem
  • April 24-25:  Nussknacker and the Mouse King
  • May 8-10: Romeo and Juliet (Prokofiev score)

Here's a link to their website:

https://www.opernhaus.ch/en/spielplan/streaming/

If you click the "Further Information" links and scroll, there are trailers.

Here's the link to Mariinsky TV:

The Mariinsky online: a weekend of theatre to mark World Theatre Day

The Mariinsky Theatre has prepared a unique programme to mark World Theatre Day. Each day from 26 to 29 March mariinsky.tv will be broadcasting dazzling performances and glittering gala concerts: the grand opening of the Mariinsky-II featuring Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo, Diana Vishneva, Ulyana Lopatkina and many other stars, the oratorio Ivan the Terrible with Alexei Petrenko and the symphonic tale Peter and the Wolf with Konstantin Khabensky as the respective Narrators, a performance by Alexandre Kantorow accompanied by the Mariinsky Orchestra and Valery Gergiev and the ballet Konyok-Gorbunok (The Little Humpbacked Horse) with Alina Somova and Vladimir Shklyarov.

On 26 March at 19.00 there will be a rare opportunity to hear immense vocal and symphony canvases by Sergei Prokofiev: the cantata Alexander Nevsky and the oratorio Ivan the Terrible for narrator, soloists, chorus and orchestra. This programme proved to be one of the most significant events at the Mariinsky Theatre commemorating one hundred and twenty-five years since the birth of the composer in April 2016 when it was also recorded. The role of the Narrator in the oratorio was performed by the acclaimed actor Alexei Petrenko, People's Artist of Russia, while the vocal roles in the works were sung by Olga Borodina (mezzo-soprano), Yulia Matochkina (mezzo-soprano) and Mikhail Petrenko (bass) with the Mariinsky Chorus and Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

On 27 March, World Theatre Day, mariinsky.tv will be broadcasting a recording of the Gala Concert marking the opening of the Mariinsky-II (the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre) in May 2013. The grand gala event featured world stars, among them the opera singers Anna Netrebko, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Plácido Domingo, Ildar Abdrazakov, Yevgeny Nikitin and René Pape, the ballerinas Diana Vishneva, Olga Yesina, Ekaterina Kondaurova and Ulyana Lopatkina, the instrumentalists Leonidas Kavakos (violin), Yuri Bashmet (viola) and Denis Matsuev (piano), as well as Mariinsky Opera and Ballet soloists and the Mariinsky Chorus, Children's Chorus and Orchestra. The stage director of this grandiose celebration was Vasily Barkhatov while the concert was designed by Zinovy Margolin. Valery Gergiev was the conductor.

Saturday morning will be time for family viewing. On 28 March at 12.00 mariinsky.tv will be screening a recording of Prokofiev's symphonic tale Peter and the Wolf, much loved by several generations of children and adults alike. The audience will be introduced to the plot and the various instruments of the orchestra by the acclaimed actor Konstantin Khabensky, while Valery Gergiev and the musicians of the Mariinsky Orchestra will be presenting the musical side of the plot. In the evening on mariinsky.tv there will be yet another innovation – a grand concert in honour of the start of the I International Moscow Festival Zaryadye. The programme is to include: Dawn over the Moskva River (introduction from the opera Khovanshchina) by Modest Musorgsky, Boléro by Maurice Ravel, Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz and Piano Concerto No 5 by Camille Saint-Saëns performed by Alexandre Kantorow, recipient of the Grand Prix, 1st prize and Gold Medal at the XVI Tchaikovsky Competition.

The theatre weekend will conclude with yet another family production. On 29 March at 12.00 there will be a staging of the vibrant ballet fairy tale Konyok-Gorbunok, which successfully combines a familiar plot that is engaging for children, its ironic interpretation that is interesting to adults, the extravagant and stylish designs by Maxim Isaev, the talented and inventive choreography of Alexei Ratmansky and the emotional music of Rodion Shchedrin. The lead roles in this recording, produced in 2013, are performed by Vladimir Shklyarov (Ivan the Fool), Alina Somova (the Tsar Maiden), Vladislav Shumakov (the Little Humpbacked Horse) and Islom Baimuradov (Gentleman of the Bedchamber). The conductor was Valery Gergiev.

Past La Scala broadcasts are streaming daily on the Raiplay website. You can find the complete list here:
http://www.teatroallascala.org/it/calendario-trasmissioni-rai.html

There is no specialized site for La Scala's broadcasts, and each one has a separate link, although you can perform a search for "teatro alla scala" and the available titles will pop up. La Scala is also providing links each day on its Facebook page.

Four ballet broadcasts are included.

March 27 - The Sleeping Beauty (Nureyev production) with Polina Semionova and Timofej Andrijashenko

(Interesting that the theater did not broadcast the since discarded Ratmansky production, but did film a subsequent revival of Nureyev's.)

April 3 - Don Quixote (Nureyev production) with Natalia Osipova and Leonid Sarafanov
No need to wait, here's the link:

Haven't found the link for this yet.

The Paris Opera Ballet is streaming Nureyev's production of Swan Lake, and in my corner of the world it isn't geoblocked.

With Léonore Baulac, Germain Louvet and François Alu.

Thanks, Volcanohunter. I'm able to get it in California. Also just saw Germain Louvet at the Mariinsky Festival in Swan Lake and he was excellent.

Staatsoper unter den Linden has a few ballets on repeat among operas.  This is the 1999 Patrice Bart Nutcracker with Nadja Saidakova, Vladimir Malakhov, and Oliver Matz, and, according to the website will stream until noon, Wednesday, April 1, the DST equivalent of CET.  (Most of Europe changed to DST this past weekend, so this should be 6 hours behind in EDT, and 9 hours behind in PDT)

Not ballet, but there's a lot of movement in this production of, of all things, Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito that was performed in the 2018-19 season by Opera Liege.  (Scroll)  The directions, sets, costumes, lighting and choreography are by Cecile Roussat and Julien Lubeck, and it's like Taymor on steroids with some Cirque mixed in.  (According to their company's (Le Schlemil Theatre) website, they met studying with Marcel Marceau!)

Today's taped live performance by the Vienna Opera is Die Frau ohne Schatten from 2019.  Before the opera started, the head of the house gave a curtain speech.  My German comprehension is pretty skeletal, but he started by saying he didn't have bad news,  I think the speech was to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Vienna Opera or the building, and he spoke about the history, the conductors, the singers, etc., but he also gave praise to the ballet, named Nureyev and Legris, and he said the company had excellent dancers who either invoke or bring great emotion.

One of my favorite operas. Is that still available to watch?

Yes!  I'm watching it now.  It should be available  until tomorrow morning.

You need to create an account and log in, but to create one, they only ask for First Name, Last Name, and email address, and then you create a password.  They might send an email confirmation before they activate your account, but once you have it, you can log in and see what's on their daily roster, for as long as free access lasts.

If you need to, click the > to get to Die Frau ohne Schatten on April 1, then click the tile with Die Frau.

https://www.staatsoperlive.com/live

If you're not logged in with an account, the button should say "FREE".  (If it's disabled, it means it's not yet available.)  If you're not logged in, it should take you to the Culturell site to log in or create an account, and then when you set up the account (and maybe log in), the button will say "Watch Video".  From the top menu, you can see the cast.

Here's a link to the list; tomorrow is a dance performance of Peer Gynt (Choreography by Edward Clug).

Actually, all of the free Vienna State Opera streams since March 15th are still available if you've got the links for them. They can be found in the relevant posts on the Wiener Staatsoper Facebook page. The exception, I think, was the first Tosca with Maria Jose Siri and Roberto Alagna (and also Frau, as it happens), where the link leads to a different opera, but I should still have the correct link in my browser history if anyone wants it.

Here's the link to Die Frau ohne Schatten

And this is the link to Thursday's Peer Gynt, which will begin at 19:00 CEST, which is 1:00 pm Eastern.

For that matter, it's better to go directly to SFB's YouTube Channel page and not try to run the videos through this forum. Performance will be better for you, and for the forum. Oh, and be sure to set the video quality to 1080p (click the Settings sprocket icon below the video timeline). And then click the Fullscreen icon next to the Settings icon to really see something.
