dirac
A review of the National Ballet of Canada in "Romeo and Juliet" by Denise Sum for danceviewtimes. Quote n contrast to the heaviness the pervades much of the ballet, the choreography for Romeo and Juliet is full of breath, expansiveness and joy. When they first meet at the ball, they are literally lifted in the air, as if floating. Their movement phrases come in sudden, ecstatic bursts, pausing just long enough to catch their breaths. Lobsanova's staccato footwork mimics a fluttering heartbeat, while her silent landings are an impressive technical feat. She throws herself into every lift, caution be damned. Côté never took his eyes off her. He was believably smitten and the urgency with which he ran to Friar Laurence to wed Juliet was especially poignant. Together, they made the tomb scene gut-wrenching. Link to comment

dirac
A review of American Ballet Theatre in "Of Love and Rage" by Victoria Looseleaf for the Fjord Review. Quote Indeed, this is ballet at its most sumptuous. Set to the music of Aram Khachaturian (known for his “Spartacus” score, which includes the exquisite love theme) and performed live by the Pacific Symphony under the exacting baton of ABT music director Ormsby Wilkins, the two-plus hour work is a feast on all levels, not least for a huge and dazzling cast. dirac
A brief note on the death of Sir John Tooley by Norman Lebrecht. Quote John was not an easy man to know, maintaining the reserve of a former Guards officer behind an impassive facade. What I saw of him was a man without guile, or malice. He answered every question I put to him without evasion and never once told me a lie. In that respect, at least, he was a moral example to all opera administrators. Link to comment
