I get that the strikes have had a big impact on the troupe's finances but this programming is kind of ho-hum. The only things that would excite me are the Roland Petit evenings (yea!) and Frederick Ashton's Rhapsody. Surprised that Raymonda isn't coming back given that there was only one performance before the strikes scuttled the rest. And didn't they just do an all-Kylian evening in 2016-17 as a replacement for the originally scheduled Benjamin Millepied/Antony Tudor double bill?

There was a rumour of having Raymonda instead of La Bayadère but perhaps it requires too much soloists just like the Kylian bill at the same time...

Kylian is a favorite of POB and Petite Mort and Sechs Tänze are new to the repertoire

Paris Opera director Stéphane Lissner has announced he will leave the head of the company at the end of December (he was due to finish the 20-21 season and leave in July 21) and that he has decided to close both Opera houses for renovation work until  the end of November (Bastille) and end of December (Garnier)

That sounds like a smart move to me, and I hope other institutions follow suit.  Almost every building has a backlog that has to be squished into a short period, usually over the summer, and this gives them half a year.

Apparently no one told iincoming director Alexander Neef that this was happening, and he's saying he can't leave the Canadian Opera Company before the originally planned takeover date in July.

Paris Opera Ballet will return to Garnier in the fall with classics and creations by renowned choreographers, despite the work taking place there until the end of the year, announced the dance director Aurélie Dupont.

https://actu.orange.fr/societe/culture/malgre-les-travaux-le-ballet-de-l-opera-de-retour-a-garnier-a-l-automne-CNT000001rl0A6.html

During the renovation work, the dancers will be on the proscenium, that is to say the front stage which will cover the orchestra pit.

For the classical, spread over twenty performances from October 2, "there will be essentially solos and pas-de-deux, danced by the stars, the first dancers and the first dancers of the Opera", she indicated.

On the contemporary side, from November 5, the corps de ballet will dance 17 representations of four creations by contemporary choreographers like Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet.

The Lacotte creation"Le Rouge et le Noir" was postponed "in October-November 2021," said Ms. Dupont, adding that the ballet "Mayerling" which was to enter the repertoire in May was moved to 2022.

It certainly won't be easy for Neef to "retain his responsibilities" with the Canadian Opera Company, since everyone entering Canada must go into quarantine for 14 days. During that period you're not even allowed to venture out onto your front lawn.

One of the recommendations from the Queen of Spades video on YouTube was for the Stanislavsky production of War and Peace:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kweLqgK36K0

There was overlap between the casts:  the splendid Polina, Ksenia Dudnikova, sang Hélène , : Sergey Balashov sang Chekalinsky and Kuragin, Denis Makarov sang Surin and Count Ilya Andreevich Rostov, and Veronika Vyatkina sang the Governess and Princess Marya,   I think they have a remarkable ensemble, with singing and acting of first-rate quality.  It's been a pleasure listening to these.

With the President of France announcing a new lockdown today, I imagine this program won't make it to the stage in November. And what of La Bayadere in December?

Link to post

The last show before "soft" lockdown is tonight and this is "Etoiles". For the moment, the dancers will still be allowed to repeat so it's not a full stop. We'll see but it doesn't look good for Bayadère anyway...

Brise lames, the Damien Jalet piece, is not included in the broadcast.
