A review of American Ballet Theatre by Sydney Boyd for Bachtrack.

As Giselle, Hee Seo poignantly captured her unbridled naïveté while delivering technique that spoke years of experience. Cory Stearns, as Count Albrecht, similarly held court, spinning and leaping with precision beyond his short-sighted character. The chemistry between the two rose to a heart-rending pitch at the close of the ballet, when Seo dazzled as she sent Stearns away from certain death to live out life with another woman.

Controversy erupts over the appointment of a new artistic director for Ballet Philippines.

Quote

Dancer-choreographer Edna Vida asked if Ballet Philippines board was infected with a deadly virus to act the way it did.

She said there was nothing wrong getting a new artistic director for a 50-year old dance company. “But to get one without the right DNA is lethal. Was our soul sold to a Russian at a steep price? Apparently,” she rued.

The ballet’s artistic director Terrence Orr began his career with “Beauty and the Beast.” “I was first exposed to it when I was a student at San Francisco Ballet and was able to perform in it,” he recalls. “It was a kind of big moment, the first time I was exposed to a full-length story ballet. Lew Christensen was a wonderful musician. He put together a wonderful Tchaikovsky score, every note perfect for the scenes he chose to do. It’s quite a sweet story and something we’re proud to put on.”

A review of San Francisco Ballet by Steven Winn for The San Francisco Chronicle.

In one of two pas de deux, Yuan Yuan Tan and Luke Ingham drew spacious, open forms with each other in an extract from the 2005 “After the Rain” by Christopher Wheeldon (“Cinderella”). Under the gentle arpeggiated breeze of an Arvo Pärt score, the dancers’ linked arms, back-bent torsos and patiently deliberate partnering cast a lovely if at times static spell. Spins, jumps and bravura technique, especially by the gyroscopic Angelo Greco, marked his duet with a pert Misa Kuranaga in Helgi Tomasson’s “Soirées Musicales” (1996).

Exploring new territory, both geographically and creatively, leads to exposure to potential new audience members and future patrons. To that end, Starrett has also partnered with The Main Course, an event venue and entertainment complex on the rapidly developing 1600 block of Main Street, to offer a Main Stage Series of dinner and dance one Friday each month.
