dirac
A review of the National Ballet of Canada by Alexander C. Kafka for DC Theatre Scene. Quote The National Ballet of Canada presented an exotic bouquet of contemporary choreography Tuesday by William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, and Alexei Ratmansky. The works, all but one performed to music from a live orchestra conducted by music director David Briskin, displayed a superbly prepared company brimming with energy and artistic ambition. dirac
A review of New York City Ballet by Robert Gottlieb in The Observer. Quote For the first time in decades I didn’t go to a City Ballet Nutcracker this past season. Not because I’ve fallen out of love with it—that could never happen—but because of the sluggish casting. Did I really need to see the same aging and eroding Sugar Plum Fairies whom I saw the year before, and the year before that, and the year before that? Or even the same still viable but set-in-stone performances that we know by heart? Yes, seasoned dancers are essential to every company, if only to show the way to their juniors, but youth must have its fling—before it’s too late. City Ballet is packed with young talent: how long does it have to wait? How long would Balanchine have waited before giving us the exceptional Mira Nadon’s Sugar Plum? Ten minutes, give or take a year. That’s how long it took him to give us Kent, Farrell, Kistler. Time will tell whether the new artistic director, Jonathan Stafford, has the confidence to take chances in a company that seems from the outside to be more and more dominated by its ballerinas—at times they appear to be running the show. ..... dirac
More stories on Liam Scarlett. The Daily Telegraph Quote Shows choreographed by the former dancer have been suspended in Australia in light of allegations against him, however the planned performance of his lauded Swan Lake adaptation for the Royal Ballet will go ahead in the UK. The Stage Quote The allegations against Scarlett, published in full by the Times, include encouraging students to send intimate photographs, sharing sexual messages on social media, commenting on students’ genitalia and inappropriate touching. It is also alleged that Scarlett took cocaine with the dancers. ABC News Quote Asked why it had not acted earlier, a spokesperson for Queensland Ballet said it had been made aware of the details and "depth" of the allegations only on Thursday, and had then acted immediately. The company said it had not received any complaints about Scarlett's conduct. San Francisco Ballet takes steps to protect families from Scarlett's "Hummingbird." Quote In a press statement today, San Francisco Ballet Executive Director Kelly Tweeddale that the troupe’s decision to remove the piece is made is “out of respect for the ongoing inquiry in London, the dance community at large, patrons of San Francisco Ballet, families of the San Francisco Ballet School and artists of the company.” Link to comment
dirac
A review of the National Ballet of Canada by Roger Catlin for Broadway World. Quote The mere title of William Forsythe's "The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude" indicated the fussy demands of the work, the final movement of Schubert's Ninth Symphony. Still, it was exuberantly handled by the company, with men in violet tights and the women in flattened lime green tutus (by Stephen Galloway) that made them appear as tops. Quickly on and off the blank stage, they performed in bursts of duos, trios, solos, and groups and fluttered off. Though not always the most exacting of ensemble movement, there was a fluidity and aliveness that continued through the 25-minute piece. Link to comment
