An interview with Marcelino Sambé by Emma Byrne for The Evening Standard.

He is especially thrilled because he does not conform to what he calls the ‘prototype’ male lead. For one thing, he’s only the second black dancer ever to make the Royal’s top tier following on from the great Carlos Acosta. ‘I feel I am bringing something completely different [to the table],’ Sambé says. ‘I’m shorter, a different shape. I can jump high and do turns. It’s really exciting to be this athletic figure on stage – hopefully I can inspire other dancers who have the same strength, perhaps the same skin colour, to go out there… I can be a prince too, but not the European princes that everybody has always seen. I’m sure there were princes in Africa at some point.’
