Ashley Wheater knows that great dance is no longer enough. “We’ve seen a change in our audience,” says the Joffrey Ballet’s artistic director. “Everyone sits at home with their phones, laptops, and iPads.” The Joffrey, he proposes, has to incorporate more flash to lure audiences away from their screens and other entertainment. “We are also competing with Broadway and the theater,” Wheater says. “So we have to present our work in a way that’s engaging.”

This new work represents another major step in the Joffrey’s continuing evolution from a company that once performed primarily shorter, non-narrative repertory to one that presents mostly full-length story ballets.

The Joffrey announces its 2019-20 season.

The Joffrey Ballet announced its 2019-20 season Tuesday, with the Chicago premieres of Cathy Marston’s “Jane Eyre” and a work by Justin Peck, as well as the returns of “Don Quixote” and “Nutcracker." All performances will be at the Auditorium Theatre, the Joffrey’s final season there before moving to the Lyric in the fall 2020.

A review of New York City Ballet by Gay Morris for danceviewtimes.

The duet, danced by Tiler Peck and Tyler Angle is notable in that the woman appears to be in charge without being mean about it. She crooks her finger and he comes, but it’s all good humored, and they shake hands at the end. The only odd part of the work, in my view, is when, halfway through the duet, the couple, who like the rest of the cast wear black costumes by Versace, disappear into the wings and reappear wearing short yellow skirts, the man now bare-chested. The new costumes add nothing to the dance and mostly look silly. Who knows where the idea came from, maybe Versace wanted to make more of a statement, maybe Forsythe thought the bright yellow added to the
