Deborah Zall, RIP

Recommended Posts

Deborah Zall died last December, aged 84. RIP.

Quote

Over the last two decades, she had begun staging works for younger dancers. These included her own and those of her mentors, as well as pieces by the longtime Graham dancer Bertram Ross, a close friend. (When he died in 2003, Mr. Ross left the rights to all his dances to Ms. Zall.) In 2014 she formed her own ensemble, the Deborah Zall Project: In the Company of Women, consisting mostly of former members of the Graham company.

As a choreographer, Zall created works for the Los Angeles Ballet, made possible by a grant from the NEA, the Arkansas Ballet in Little Rock, and the Harkness Dance Players. She restaged Bertram Ross' work Nocturne for the Martha Graham Dance Ensemble and the Ailey/Fordham Dancers, and she assisted Yuriko in restaging Steps in the Street. CBS-TV, PBS, and the BBC in London filmed Ms. Zall's works for telecast, and her Kaddish for Ten Women has been staged and filmed at schools and universities in London.
