In 1969, the groundbreaking dance school Dance Theater of Harlem was born, thanks to Mitchell and and founding partner Karel Shook, Mitchell’s teacher. The classical ballet school began with 30 students in a church basement and provided opportunity in dance training for children in an underserved community. The school quickly grew into 400 students.

After nearly 15 years with Balanchine’s company, Mr. Mitchell struck out on his own and in 1969 co-founded an all-black dance school that eventually grew to include an all-black professional company. He said the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. a year earlier filled him with a sense of urgency to start the school.

Alexandra Waterbury files an amended complaint against New York City Ballet, et al.

Daniels said Longhitano was not a junior board member at the ballet, but had contributed $12,000 to the company between 2010 and 2016. 

"New York City Ballet has already announced that we plan to make a donation in that amount to a local charity that addresses women's issues," he said.
