Milwaukee Ballet's world premiere of "Beauty and the Beast" Thursday evening offered several important life lessons: never snub the poor, give your favorite book to your roommate and hire Todd Edward Ivins to redecorate your apartment immediately.

When we meet Belle (the lovely Nicole Teague-Howell*), the townsfolk adore her. She's reading Aladdin and his Magic Flying Carpet aloud, and all are swept up in the tale. Belle's pair of fussy, frivolous sisters (Marize Fumero and Lahna Vanderbush) offer an amusing foil for our heroine. They'd rather fawn over the latest fashions and be courted by a couple of peacocking, candy-colored dandies (Parker Brasser-Vos and Randy Crespo) than read a book.

The real draw is two new works by the celebrated William Forsythe, including the world premiere of Playlist, the first piece made on a British ballet company in over twenty years. Technical, concept-driven Forsythe isn’t always everyone’s cup of tea, but the company attacks Approximate Sonata 2016 with verve and gusto.

All eyes are on the world premiere of William Forsythe’s first ballet made for a British ballet company for 20 years: Playlist (Track 1, 2), teasingly positioned as the final piece of the evening. Twelve men roar on like adrenaline junkies to the electric whump of neo soul and house beats in a mischievous reversal of the traditional female corps de ballet – an all male ensemble of dressed-down Swan Lake swans let loose in a house disco. Bursting with energy and high spirits, this exercise in neo-classical machismo may not be Forsythe’s most challenging work but it is certainly one of his most entertaining and provides a crowd-pleasing climax to a terrific programme.

The turbulent environment led to a third of the company’s dancers leaving in the space of two years, though Rojo has argued that she has always had their well-being and best interests at heart. An Arts Council investigation has since pronounced satisfaction with ENB’s policies and processes and so, with all whisperings put to bed, this US-themed mixed bill, featuring a new piece by choreographer William Forsythe, and the first showing from the company following the allegations, was a strong reminder of what the ENB does best.

To wield that degree of control is the sign of a master, and in Approximate Sonata 2016, a work in which Forsythe revisits past material, there’s the same authority............

As Tiffany Hedman pats her partner’s buttocks when he edges too close, or Alina Cojocaru encourages Joseph Caley to make a second attempt at a tricky slide, we see men and women as casually equal partners.

A review of Washington Ballet by Sarah Kaufman in The Washington Post.

With this program, titled “Mixed Masters,” which officially opened Thursday at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater, the dancers, too, look revitalized and renewed. They combine confidence with a light touch, so difficult to do and so appealing. This newfound lightness is apparent in big ways and small ones: in the dancers’ floating ease in jumps, in their swift, skimming steps, just off the floor, and in the women’s carefully shaped feet, a detail that lengthens the body and adds an elegant finish.

A review of LakeCities Ballet Theatre in 'Giselle' by Cheryl Callon for TheaterJones.

Quote

That’s exactly what happened at the MCL Grand Theatre in Lewisville, as LakeCities Ballet Theatre takes on the ambitious ballet again. Their first staging in 2009 brought together then-soloist of American Ballet Theatre Sarah Lane (before her Black Swan fame) and high school senior and LBT member Steven Loch as the principal characters. Since then, Lane has been promoted to principal at ABT, and Loch has danced his way up the ranks of Pacific Northwest Ballet to soloist. If this review has to give a singular reason to see this performance, it’s these two.
