Gomes and ABT

I would love to see Royal pick up some rolls too.  I just feel a little bad talking about it in a discussion that's about Marcelo and the very upsetting 'circumstances' surrounding him. Perhaps somebody could start a separate conversation about who picks up the TBAs that are there because of Marcelo's departure.   Sorry, if I seem like a party pooper.

Theo, I absolutely agree. I've been uncomfortable reading these "replacement" posts, and think they merit a thread of their own.

Moderator note: Everyone, as you all know, we try to avoid discussing the discussion. The giant gap Gomes leaves in ABT's roster, and how that gap might be filled, is relevant to a discussion of his resignation as one of the factors the company would have had to consider in the course of the investigation and also raises the question of how the company will cope going forward in the short term.

If anything, the comments here reflect how important Gomes was (so sad to use the past tense, alas) to the company........

I took a look at his instagram page:

https://www.instagram.com/marcelua/

And it's really sad to look at now. It's almost a picture history of ABT. The farewells, the debuts, the new works, the old works, and so on. It seemed as if the company was really his life.

It is painful to look at that page full of great mementos from his professional life. He would had had a Grand finale at ABT.

I'd be in favor of Hoven being assigned one or two of his spots (it would certainly be bittersweet for Hoven, who seems to be very good friends with Gomes, based on their Instagram accounts). While I didn't catch his Sylvia or recent Nutcracker in Costa Mesa, his physique and technique have undergone a dramatic transformation in recent seasons. And he can partner tall women. But please, no more Hammoudi.

I agree with you completely on all counts. I wish that they'd bring back that incredibly charming, charismatic Vladimir Shklyarov if they can tear him away from his darling family for a few. Saw him with Stella Abrera in her Giselle debut (with ABT) just before she was (finally!!!) promoted. He blew me away from the second he stepped on the stage. Oh, and can Vlad-lad dance! He's an excellent partner too!

It looks like he already had some gigs lined up. But also very sad that he's not going to get the fond farewell he deserves.

Haha -- yes! He was the most impressive male guest artist I've ever seen at ABT, but he made sure it was always Abrera's night. Just fantasizing here, but maybe they could reassign Whiteside to Murphy's Giselle and Romeo and Juliet, and bring in Shklyarov to partner Abrera in one (or both) of those ballets. (I think Whiteside has said in an interview that Murphy is his favorite partner, and they certainly have a good rapport, it seems.)

I would love to see Shklyarov partnering Abrera again, and especially instead of Whiteside.

Thrilled that Marcelo is communicating with his fans and that his other engagements are proceeding as scheduled.

ADDED:  Hopefully Bourne knows that Marcelo has a substantial following in New York, and  that any production Bourne brings to NY featuring him will sell very well.

I'm curious, where are you seeing post-resignation communications? His last Instagram post was Dec. 15.

I had always wondered if, post retirement, Gomes might continue to contribute to ABT in other capacities...particularly hoping he could pass along some of his knowledge of how to partner. That, presumably, is out of the question now.

How about Calvin Royal as replacement for one or two of Gomes’ dates?

I think Royal needs another year of development before taking on such a role. He was just promoted to soloist this year. (Though I think he will be extraordinary when he does and my dream SL casting is him with Catherine Hurlin.) However, if he is cast this year I'll be thrilled and will likely fall over myself to snatch up a ticket.

The two situations should not be compared.  It was entirely appropriate for NYCB to hire a law firm to investigate because the allegations against Martins come from alleged victims who are or were employees of NYCB. The claims are for wrongdoing by Martins during the course and in the scope of his employment as head of NYCB and SAB. That is not the case  regarding the claim against Marcelo.  One size reaction does not fit all.

We don't know what is in Gome's contract.

Many contracts have a "morals" clause. This allows someone to be released from the contract and/or terminated if there is an egregious moral trangression.

It was the morals clause that forced Loretta Young to pull off her massive baby deception: she gave birth to Clark Gable's daughter and then readopted her and thus raised her as her own daughter but told her daughter she was adopted.

Gomes being a high-profile dancer and a face of ABT very well could have had a morals clause that was violated.

Jeremie Neveu of the Bordeax Ballet posted this selfie w/ Gomes yesterday:

And, according to this, Gomes is still scheduled to partner Dorothee Gilbert of the Paris Opera Ballet in Turin as part of Roberto Bolle & Friends:

Very glad to see this. And no indication (yet) of a cancellation of the film showing in January:

I hope he'll be able to finish his career with dignity in Europe and Russia. And I wouldn't be surprised if his retirement  performance is at the Mariinsky, hosted by Vishneva.
