UNBOUND 2018: A Festival of New Works

Recommended Posts

Today's live broadcast (10/8/17) is now available on the SFB Facebook video page, and hopefully, will appear on their YouTube page soon :

https://www.facebook.com/pg/sfballet/videos/?ref=page_internal

Trey McIntyre, Cathy Marston, and Alonzo King are featured in this broadcast.
"Look for Principal Dancers Sofiane Sylve and Tiit Helimets dancing a pas de deux; Principal Dancers Mathilde Froustey, Sarah Van Patten, and (brand-new to SFB) Ulrik Birkkjaer in a trio, and Corps de Ballet member Benjamin Freemantle in a break-out solo."

The September 8, 2017 broadcast has appeared on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk0NSGok64k

However, the audio appears out-of-sync with the visuals, at least for me. Hopefully that will be fixed.

EDIT: the audio and video tracks are a better match by about 17:50 into the broadcast (as the Cathy Marston section is about to start).

Mathilde Froustey posted some photos to Instagram regarding a video shoot of the new Cathy Marston ballet. No word yet as to where this video might be shown. In the photo below  we have Sarah Van Patten, Cathy Marston, Mathilde Froustey, videographer Mark, and Ulrik Birkkjaer.

Humorously, Elizabeth Mateer replied to the posting by asking "is that my leotard?"

Mathilde: "Yes !!! I left you a note on your locker !!! Cathy asked me on Friday at 7pm [to wear] a pink long sleeves Leotard.... it will be cleaned and back to mama on Monday morning !"

SFB will be hosting a symposium in conjunction with the UNBOUND Festival: April 27–29, 2018 - I think Tomasson has taken to heart the discussions he witnessed at the Positioning Ballet conference (hosted by the Dutch National Ballet in February 2017).

Boundless: A Symposium on Ballet’s Future

"Bringing together noted artists, scholars, and critics, this symposium provides an opportunity for discussion, debate, and collaboration about ballet in the 21st century..."

https://www.sfballet.org/season/events/unbound-2018/boundless-symposium

SFB is also setting up a webpage on which related short films will be posted:

"Think ballet can only happen on stage? Think again. As part of Unbound, we’re partnering four festival choreographers with film directors to create short dance films inspired by the emotional impact, daring physicality, and artistic expression of these new ballets."

It's a ways off of course (and who knows what will happen in the meantime), but I have tickets for each of the programs. So, barring any unfortunate developments, I'll try to type up my impressions. ;)

Hopefully a number of people will report on the festival...

A video of Edwaard LIang discussing his Unbound work The Infinite Ocean:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uce4M-9RCVU

The Unbound page (https://www.sfballet.org/unbound) hasn't been updated, but should be soon.

Thanks so much!

Julia Rowe, Jahna Frantziskonis, Yuan Yuan Tan, Sofiane Sylve and Tiit Helimets (and others) all appear briefly in the rehearsal footage.

There's an audio issue for me - I'm going to investigate if this exists in all browsers - but Ewaard's voice track is very quiet in relation to the video's background music so he is hard to hear. I'm not sure why it was released that way; normally that kind of audio levels issue is fixable.

Yes, I was very happy to see the other dancers in his piece as he only showed Yuan Yuan & Vitor in their PDD during the first Unbound webcast.  Also, after hearing Edwaard's inspiration for the piece I am even more excited to see the final work.

Erik Tomasson got back in touch with me regarding UNBOUND images:

"Just wanted to let you know that I reached an agreement with the dancers for three of the Unbound images. They are currently for sale at my website (www.eriktomasson.com) for a limited time under the 'store' link at the top of the page. The prints are available for purchase until May 1st 2018."

http://www.eriktomasson.com/store/

One size only for all prints.
Please allow 1-2 weeks for delivery.  Last day to order prints is May 1st 2018.

FYI: I sent Erik Tomasson an email reply asking if there will be any other UNBOUND images made available - if so I'll update this information.

An interview with Annabelle Lopez Ochoa has been posted on the company's YouTube channel:

On another note, I attended last night's Opening Gala (it was fabulous, will try to post a brief blurb in the gala topic).  Before the second half began, Helgi came out to talk briefly about Unbound: A Festival of New Works.  The following video was also shown:

Christopher Wheeldon on his piece (Bound) for the Unbound Festival

Things to note:  Technology, disconnectiveness of our time and how we are 'bound' to our devices is theme of the work.  Women are in ballet flats and not pointe shoes.

Dancers spotted:  Jaime Garcia Castilla, Lonnie Weeks, Yuan Yuan Tan, Carlo DiLanno, Benjamin Freemantle, Angelo Greco, Esteban Hernandez, Davide Occhipinti, Alexandre Cagnat, Minghuan Wang, Frances Chung.

Agree about King's comment!  Pacific Northwest Ballet recently hosted a panel discussion on contemporary ballet that was based on some of the works in the last couple of seasons (I'll post my notes when I manage to transcribe them).  I hope that someone (or even better, several someones!) will post a report about this session here.

Yes, I remember hearing about that discussion and wondered if there was any video of the event. That's the kind of discussion that really needs to be made available to the public.
