The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra may not provide live accompaniment for this year's Civic Dance Company Nutcracker.

The 37-year partnership appears to have ended, at least for now, in a dispute over financial and production responsibilities. As it stands, the ballet productions will continue this year, but the young dancers will perform to recorded music.

“They want to dance with the symphony,” said Cindy Trueblood, co-owner, with her husband, of Civic Dance Company. “Nothing is better than live music. It inspires, and they know that. I tell them over and over how lucky they are to perform with a live symphony, a rarity unless you’re a professional dancer.”
