Mariinsky at BAM 2015

Recommended Posts

I think they're bringing only one full-length ballet - the ridiculous, boring and pretty much unwatchable Ratmansky's Cinderella.

I feel really sorry for Mariinsky as they seem to be stuck with Ardani everywhere in North America outside of Washington, D.C. and are doomed by this company's inability to finance and produce a real tour. Just compare to what the Bolshoi did this past summer: what venues they played, how many ballets they presented, etc.

Waelsung, i hope your prediction is wrong. I heard a different story. But since it's not public nor published, we'd have to wait. I was checking the BAM site several times today to no avail

PS: found at some blog site that the announcement date was moved to tomorrow. let's see

When BAM has a hot show to promote, they ramp up the publicity early. For example, they have an acclaimed production of Iceman Cometh coming to BAM in Feb-March 2015, and they were already ramping up the publicity about it in the press in December 2013. Something tells me that if they were presenting Mariinsky for a long run of important works, they would have already been ramping up the publicity machine about it. I hope I'm wrong, obviously.

Yes, Ardani productions definitiely leave a lot to be desired. They tend to be cheap and cheesy (Kings of Dance, Solo for Two Osipova, the various Vishneva shows). The Mariinsky (Kirov) used to regularly come to the Met -every two to three years - during the 1990s. The money sponsorships for big tours in the US has dried up. I'm sure if Mariinsky could find a better option than Ardani, they would. Kudos to the Kennedy Center for using federal funds to make possible visits from important international companies to the US on a regular basis.

It also seems that as far as Mariinsky touring goes, arranging touring funding/opportunities for the orchestra is priority number one. The Mariinsky orchestra comes to Carnegie every year, and also tours to numerous other American cities each year. No such opportunities are afforded to the ballet or the opera. I have no complaints about seeingthe orchestra here on a regular basis. I'm just making a point about financing issues and allocation of resources.

More info from the NY Times - casts to include Somova, Kondaurova, Vishneva, Lopatkina and Vladimir Shkylarov.

The press release states that leadership funds for the Mariinsky residency at BAM provided by Fredrick Iseman. Well thank you Fredrick!! Looks like Ardani had no role in this.

Partial Casting is on the BAM website (not in the press release). Go to the dance section, and click on the boxes for each of the Mariinsky ballet productions. If these casts turn out to be true, it will be amazing.

Unfortunately, lots of casting info coming out of the Mariinsky for US tours has turned out to be false in the past.

what are seating recommendations for BAM? I notice for ABT'S Nut that the most expensive seats are in the first four rows of the orchestra and then it goes down in increments about every four or five rows back from there. What's the raking like? How do the first few rows of the mezzanine compare with rows 5-10 of the orchestra which are at the same price?

I believe that Cinderella was made for Diana Vishneva. I saw her debut twice in Washington DC and was awed !

This is almost ten years later and Diana Vishneva has changed. She might have to reinvent herself but it could be exceptional as well. Igor Kolb was there to amazingly keep her from flying off the stage.

In the meantime, Alina Somova has certainly made it her own, based on video clips. If she doesn't perform it, this will be the second time in less than a year and I have to wonder why? Maybe that and Swan Lake are too much.

Added:

Just saw your casting list, YID. Thank you. It's great to see Daria Pavlenko being cast in Cinderella (or any other significant lead). Her husband, Alexander Sergeyev *Is* the Prince. Hopefully he will appear as well.

Added added:

Just noticed that Yekaterina Kondaurova is doing All the programs. Unstoppable! Remember she did all the leads in Jewels in one evening at last year's Mariinsky Festival. She could be another great Cinderella. I've seen four of her Swan Lakes. She's a statuesque dream.

Always good to see Danila Korsuntsev. He's partnered more than one famous ballerina into greatness.

Oy, looks like I will have to see Cinderella again for both Vishneva and Pavlenko. Also. I'll bet the 1/21 Swan Lake cast has not been published yet because they've only published the principal dancers. So we can expect to see soloists like Skorik/Askerov or maybe Matvienko or Kolegova.

YID, I CAN'T believe they will leave Skorik behind. And I am praying they bring Kimin Kim. He's fantastic! Also, how long has it been since they let Pavlenko dance? Seems like ages.

Or Stepanova or Shirinkina. But my money is on Skorik.
