Carley Broder, our own carbro, has died

Earlier tonight, Carley's sister, Betsy Broder wrote:

"Surrounded by family, Carley died earlier this afternoon. She died peacefully and with no pain."

Carley was always an intelligent, friendly presence on Ballet Talk, welcoming new members and answering questions, moderating discussions with wisdom and professionalism. She was a good friend and an avid balletgoer who attended performances of ABT and NYCB almost daily. Her sudden death is a great blow to her family, friends both in real and virtual life and all who knew her. My heart is broken.

She added so much to our discusisons, as people have said, and she also was invaluable behind the scenes, managing membership, which is quite a task! You couldn't ask for a better friend. Very kind, loving, tactful, intuitive, a feminine touch and lovely to be around at a show. She'd just get what you got, even with disparate people and be so moved when something was beautiful that it helped you understand the beauty. Always in harmony. My plan on her passing is to see the shows doubly well - I know she would have loved them. That's what I thought last night. She's got to see them through our eyes and feel them in our hearts now.

I was shocked to read this. How often we (or at least I am apt to) forget that/how time passes. I met Carley in what for me was - truly - another world. One belonging - as she does now - to time. In every way it was a privilege. I sit here remembering the joy of her many kindnesses whilst we shared the excitement of our enthusiasm. We were friends of a shared passion. The power of that gift was heady. I can feel its air even now. The memory burns in the sincerity of her warmth. It is one I could never care to forget. Bless you, Carley. Bless you for ALL. May you not only rest but smile in peace.

I was shocked and saddened by Carley's passing. She was very generous and welcoming, with a keen interest in ballet and knowledge on other topics. Many of my ballet experiences in the past 15 years included chatting with Carley during intermissions, before shows, after shows, on trains to shows I remember one time fondly when she and Susan met up with me in Washington DC to see the Suzanne Farrell ballet. And then we waited for that dreaded early-morning train back up to NY. We exchanged views of the ballet we just saw, ballet we loved, our lives and even weird neighbors. She will be greatly missed. My condolences to her family.

It's so nice to read the remembrances of those whose lives intertwined with Carley's, as mine did. I am still in shock and slept restlessly as thoughts of Carley entered my dreams and were my first thoughts on waking throughout the night. Her sister Betsy has posted the coordinates for Carley's memorial service:

"Carley will be honored and remembered at a 2 p.m. service on Sunday, March 2 at the Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, 630 Amsterdam Ave., NYC."

The chapel is located in Carley's beloved Upper West Side - UWS - where she lived. She was passionate about ballet, politics, just causes, pets, and her neighbourhood, among other things. The love in her heart will no doubt be felt at the Jewish Community Chapel on Sunday afternoon.

As long as I have posted on this board - since 1999 - I have read her posts Unfortunately I never met her in person, but sometimes one gets this feeling: this person I would like as my best friend.
