Helene
Ismene Brown posted a translation of Russian critic Tatyana Kuznetsova's review of the Royal Ballet in "Giselle" for her blog: http://www.ismeneb.com/Blog/Entries/2014/2/14_Russian_critic_reviews_Royal_Ballet_Giselle.html I know that tone often needs a context, but this is much more straightforward than I'm used to reading. I love how Kuznetsova emphasizes the production choices. Link to comment
canbelto
It's an interesting review but she seems to have a mindset that a more abstract, Romanticized Giselle is the better way to do it, and concrete dramaturgy is not appropriate. I'm not sure I agree. Link to comment
sandik
Canbelto, I'm not sure I agree about her point of view, but even if that's the case -- she puts her finger on a couple of really fundamental issues about the work (how does she actually die, the distinction between court and peasantry) that I'm glad to see discussed. There aren't that many works in the standard canon that get enough productions so that we can discuss these kind of distinctions. Giselle really does offer multiple possibilities, and I'm thrilled to see some of them hashed out! Link to comment
