'64 marks the year the dancer created the role of Count Molder in Saint-Léon's NEMEA, ou l'amour vengé in Paris, which this photo may or may not document. Mérante danced Count Molder opposite Marfa Muravieva's Néméa, who created the title role in FIAMETTA, the St. Petersburg-produced ballet that gave rise to the NEMEA production in Paris with music by Ludwig Minkus.

eventually, Mérante went on to be ballet master at the Paris Opera, where he choreographed, among other ballets, Sylvia, Yedda, La Corrigane, and Les Deux Pigeons.
