Marina Harss has written an article on Korbes in "The New York Times."  I didn't realize that she was four months pregnant when she danced her final performance with the company!

I have to go back and remember what she danced in that show -- The Calling and Serenade, but what else?

I personally find it amazing when hearing of dancers continuing to dance when pregnant at any stage let alone perform something like Balanachine at four months. I suppose everyone's pregnancy is different but woah that's incredible :o

The tricky part is a bit further along in pregnancy when your shape starts to change and your center of weight shifts, which is why those videos of Ashley Bouder turning at 8+ months were so gobsmackingly astonishing.  Earlier on, it's more a matter of energy levels -- it's hard work for the body to be pregnant.

As noted in the article above and the following article, Carla Korbes was going to dance in Wheeldon's After the Rain PDD for Benjamin Millepied's LA Dance Project:

I was down in LA for a few days and luckily was able to get a couple of tickets for Saturday's performance.  Imagine my surprise when I opened the program and saw who Carla's partner was -  Batkhurel Bold!!!  Here is a review from the LA Times:

I had seen Bold before in Tide Harmonic, but this was my first time seeing Carla.  They were simply wonderful!!

Jahna Frantziskonis graces the cover of February/March 2017 issue of Pointe Magazine.  Luckily, I found a link to the article:

Among the people singing her praises:  Lorena Feijoo, SFB Principal Dancer retiring at the end of this season.  “Jahna has something you can’t teach,” observes Feijoo. “She is an artist.”

To catch you up on what Jahna has danced this season:  In Program 1 she is in the large corps of Jiří Bubeníček's Fragile Vessels, the 'School of Thought' in Justin Peck's In the Countenance of Kings (you can see her in a clip filmed in an old train station in Oakland last spring:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMTv_Y0Zrl4), and the corps of Helgi Tomasson's Haffner Symphony.  In Program 2, she made her debut in William Forsythe's Pas/Parts 2016 in the Saturday 1/28 matinee performance.  She danced the same part Soloist Julia Rowe danced, partnered by Soloist James Sofranko (along with corps dancer Henry Sidford in the trio).  She performed the same role again the past 2 nights and will do so again Friday night.  She was fierce & fearless!!  I was fortunate to see all the performances, but missing Friday's since I will actually be in Seattle to see Cendrillon!!!

During the Nutcracker run, she performed in various roles (dancing doll, housekeeper, Spanish, snowflake, waltzing flower) and also performed the Sugar Plum Fairy in (IIRC) 3 performances.  I was able to see her as the Sugar Plum Fairy and she was simply marvelous - beautiful arms and musicality (I could go on & on).

I was really pleased to see the cover -- she's a lovely dancer and we still miss her up here.  She was part of an open coaching session with Forsythe when the company learned his New Suite (which they're repeating later this season!).  She got a lot of positive attention from him, and really responded to the corrections -- she seems to have a real affinity for the work.

Perhaps we will cross paths during Cendrillon!

Jahna has given me a good reason to visit San Francisco.  I had never seen SFB perform and really enjoy their variety of spectacular dancers and rep, and how they use their arms.

I saw Jahna in Fearful Symmetries.  That little thing was fierce!  I saw a higher ranked dancer the next night and honestly thought Jahna was better and more impactful.

i wish Helgi would announce casting earlier so I can catch her in featured roles like Olga.  However I love those weekends when there's two mixed bill programs, then I can usually catch her in something.

I do miss Jahna in PNB but have enjoyed having my horizons expanded and happily following her advancement.

Anne Derieux, who was a principal dancer with the company 1992-2000, is now the Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Cornish College for the Arts in Seattle.  After she left PNB she was Executive Director for Evergreen Ballet and Spectrum Dance Theater, going from there to the French American School of the Puget Sound as the Director of Advancement.
