Barbara
I think it's the namaste hand position from yoga. You see a lot of performers use this gesture - James Taylor and Sting, all the time. Link to comment
bart
Barbara, thank you! An eastern origin like this certainly makes sense in our contemporary world, and photos available on Google support your suggestion. Link to comment
sandik
The concert was being filmed, and it will be on public television in September, I believe.Great news! Thanks for that report, abatt. I love that kind of tribute (i.e., when there's a real body of work, as well as a remarkable artist, being celebrated.) So many people on that stage have reasons to be grateful to Sondheim. (my bold) Tangentially, I had a similar moment during the recent Oscars telecast, looking at the crowd of actors who came to pay tribute to John Hughes. Even though I just missed his demographic when he first started making films, I always thought he really got to the gist of being a teenager. I was pleased and surprised at the number of actors who worked with him. Link to comment
PeggyR
Nice birthday present! After five decades of critically acclaimed work on Broadway, the composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, below, is receiving a rare laurel and one of the few that had not yet come his way: his name on a Broadway theater. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/23/theater/...ref=todayspaper Link to comment
bart
For many years, after moving to NYC, I assumed that Henry Miller's Theater (the venue being renamed) was named for the rather scandalous author of Tropic of Cancer, etc. Here's a link to a more accurate history of the theater. The article already mentions the new name! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Miller%27s_Theatre Link to comment
