THE SWINEHERD

Recommended Posts

yesterday's links, (Wed. Jul. 15) mentions a recent production of THE SWINEHERD in Denmark to note that the designs were done by Queen Margarethe.

one of Vaslav Nijinsky's first prominent roles at the Maryinsky was in a ballet based on this same theme was the title role of a ballet choreographed by Klavdia Kulichevskaya called THE PRINCE GARDENER. (L. Schollar was his partner, as the princess, soon to be replaced by M.F.Kshessinska, who was taken with the ballet's success and with the growing prominence of Nijinsky as a dancer.)

Thanks Robert for drawing attention to this revival.

Another relation to the Swineherd ballet of Bournonville, as it was also based on the Hans Christian Anderson tale, is Nijinska’s “Les cent baisers” (The hundred kisses) first staged at Covent Garden on 18 July 1935 with Baronova as the Princess and Lichine as the Prince with music by Baron Frederic d’Erlanger and designs by Jean Hugo.

You can read an English translation of the tale at:-
