Ethan Stiefel from American Ballet Theatre Guests with

The National Ballet of Canada

Fall Season Opens November 5

October 1, 2008… The National Ballet of Canada announced today that Ethan Stiefel, Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre, will guest with The National Ballet of Canada in George Balanchine’s classic ballet Symphony in C. Also on the programme is Christopher Wheeldon’s acclaimed Polyphonia and the company premiere of Twyla Tharp’s In The Upper Room. The Fall mixed programme runs November 5 - 9, 2008 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

Ethan Stiefel is currently a Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre and Dean of The School of Dance for the North Carolina School of the Arts. He starred in the feature film Center Stage and returns to play the role of Cooper Nielsen in Center Stage 2, scheduled for release in November 2008. Mr. Stiefel’s repertoire includes leading roles in all of the full-length classics as well as works by Twyla Tharp, Sir Frederick Ashton, Jirí Kylián, Paul Taylor, Christopher Wheeldon, August Bournonville, William Forsythe, Jerome Robbins, Lar Lubovitch, George Balanchine, Antony Tudor and Mark Morris. Television credits include The Dream, Le Corsaire and the documentary Born to be Wild. He has made numerous appearances as a guest artist with the Royal Ballet, Kirov Ballet, New York City Ballet, the Australian Ballet and other companies throughout the world.

Tiit Helimets, a Principal with San Francisco Ballet, will also appear as a guest artist in Symphony in C. Mr. Helimets has danced principal roles in the classical repertoire as well as works by such choreographers as David Bintley, Sir Peter Wright, Kenneth MacMillan, Sir Frederick Ashton, Helgi Tomasson, George Balanchine Christopher Wheeldon, Twyla Tharp and Stanton Welch. Prior to joining San Francisco Ballet, Mr. Helimets danced with Birmingham Royal Ballet and Estonian National Ballet.

Mr. Stiefel and Mr. Helimets’ performance dates in Symphony in C will be announced shortly.

Symphony in C (1947) is a glorious, timeless example of the Balanchine aesthetic on a grand scale. Originally created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947 under the name Le Palais de Cristal, it was later restaged under its new name for New York City Ballet when Balanchine emigrated to the United States. Set to music by Georges Bizet, this piece remains one of the most thrilling of the great choreographer’s works and highlights every facet of the entire company’s artistry.

In a very short time, the British-born, New York-based Christopher Wheeldon has come to occupy a central position in the ranks of genuinely important contemporary choreographers. In 2007, Mr. Wheeldon announced the creation of his own dance company, Morphoses / The Wheeldon Company, based in New York City with Lourdez Lopez. Polyphonia (2001) is in many ways a distillation of Mr. Wheeldon’s multi-faceted talent. Featuring ten stylistically varied piano pieces by György Ligeti, the ballet explores an astonishing array of formal strategies and moods, creating in the process a beautiful, bristling and dynamic tapestry of movement.

In The Upper Room (1986) is quintessential Twyla Tharp, a work that evokes both her wide-ranging cultural influences and her unmistakable love of pure physicality, dynamism and expressive possibilities of bodies in motion. Set to a mesmerizing score by Philip Glass, the work weds speed and shapeliness, vigor and intricacy in an unforgettable choreographic vision.
