Adolph Bolm

Recommended Posts

this scan of two crudely cropped and mounted photographs, probably by Mishkin, shows Adolph Bolm two times, presumably during his years in and around NYC, c. 1917.

biographical information notes that AB created (and presumably danced in) various works, including those he made once he left Diaghilev in 1917 and would have been available for Mishkin's NY photography studio.

the work/role documented by the photo could be a reflection of WHITE PEACOCK - see below - or maybe better still:

FALLING LEAVES (or POEM CHOREOGRAPHI) for a Broadway revue called MISS 1917, for a Charles Dillingham and Florenz Ziegfeld production starring Flora Revalles and in which it is noted that AB danced "The Wind" (this number is believed to have been based on Pavlova's AUTUMN LEAVES - see below - AB had previous touring connections to Pavlova )

related credits:

White peacock : Chor & scen: Adolph Bolm; mus: Charles T. Griffes. First perf: U.S.: Ballet Intime tour, 1917.

Autumn leaves : Original title: Idilio. Chor & lib: Anna Pavlova; mus: Frédéric Chopin; scen: C. Korovine. First perf: Rio de Janeiro, Teatro Municipal, May 19, 1918 (matinee), as part of "Divertissements." Subsequently performed under title: Autumn leaves

No idea, your guess sounds good -- but my LORD, doesn't he look beautiful!

two dance historians with special interests in Pavlova and Bolm, who as we know were closely linked at one point in their respective careers, have weighed in by individual emails to suggest that FALLING LEAVES is as good a guess as any. as one said: 'the wig is pretty memorable"
