Youskevitch, again

I have to agree... it's one of the most beautiful photos of Markova I've seen... and so I'm surprised it isn't in all the books... Is it because the feet are slightly cropped that it got less distribution? Or was it posed and not actually from the ballet?

the minimal captioning on the back of the GISELLE photo has some indication of newspaper notes, size, etc. and the word 'film' - so i wonder if there was a film of this cast and this was meant as publicity for such a film.

as i said, it's not dated or much identified.

Oh, that is a lovely image -- especially her right hand. About a million years ago I took a mime course where we spent quite a bit on time on our hands. That gently cupped shape was called the 'blessing' hand, and I've always thought it was very evocative.

There's also something wonderfully maternal about it -- a mother seeking to assure a sick child that everything is all right. Between Act I and and II Giselle comes to know a new and deeper kind of love. To me, the gesture expresses that love.
