BRB dances Sleeping Beauty in Norfolk, VA

Birmingham Royal Ballet will be performing in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2007. Communciations Director Keith Longmore, speaking recently on BBC Radio WM revealed:

'We’re off to America to take part in the Jamestown Festival, to commemorate the landings of the first pilgrims in the States'. Describing the planned performances abroad as 'a great ambassadorial role for the city again', he stated 'we're very happy to be doing everything that we’re doing'.

The Company will be performing Sir Peter Wright's The Sleeping Beauty on the 4 - 6 May. BRB last visited the States in 2004, to perform as part of the Lincoln Center Festival in New York, presenting works including Sir Frederick Ashton's Enigma Variations and Dante Sonata.

I'm curious. Could anyone compare Wright's SB for BRB to his production for the Dutch National Ballet?

I'm not really all that interested in the scenery or costumes but rather the choreography and staging.

I know the Dutch version from the DVD.

I haven't seen the Dutch company's version, but I believe they are very close, if not identical.

I've seen photos of the sets/costumes of the BRB production of Beauty. They are identical to those of Dutch National Ballet. Am assuming that the staging/movement is the same, as both are by Peter Wright.

This is my favourite production of Sleeping Beauty. It is very traditional (IMHO). We saw some wonderful performances by the company in the UK January-March 2006.

It is a very handsome production with gorgeous red and gold designs. It includes a good deal of mime. The Lilac Fairy here is a character rather than a dancing role. Very much worth seeing if you can.
