rg
there has been some interest on this thread in vaganova's DIANA AND ACTEON interpolation into ESMERALDA, for her 1935 staging of the perrot/petipa/gorsky. here is a tightly cropped photo from the period with the names A. Shelest and S. Kaplan written in pencil on the back (Bremser's dictionary entry, by nina alovert, gives 1948 for Shelest's debut as Diana) . as we can see, the dance included an ensemble of 8 women, in this case they appear almost to be student dancers, or very young members of the troupe at this time. Thank you for posting this photograph which I found fascinating as I have been interested in Shelest for a long time. Shelest was by repute and outstanding member of the Kirov ballet and regrettably there is very little on film to evaluate her reputation. Maya Plisetskaya, is quoted as saying that Shelest "... was absolutely complete; a unity of style, intellect, technique and dramatic abilities". Link to comment
