Ballet de Toulouse, 2006/2007 season

Recommended Posts

I've had a look at the site of the Ballet du Capitole de Toulouse, and the 2006-2007 is announced there.

There will be 4 ballet programs:

-"Don Quichotte", in a production by Nanette Glushak (October, 5 performances)

-a mixed bill with "Theme and variations" (Balanchine), "Sinfonietta" (Kylian)

and "Brel" (Van Cauwenbergh) (January, 3 performances)

-"The Nutcracker", in a production by Michel Rahn (February, 5 performances)

-a mixed bill with "Paganini !" (Benjamin Millepied), "SYNC" (Nils Christe) and a new work

by Jacopo Godani (April, 5 performances)

The ballet will also perform in some of the operas.

It is not a very big season, but it was about the same in the previous seasons (generally four

programs), and at least it does include a decent amount of classical ballets, which is becoming rarer and rarer in French theaters... Also the company generally tours quite a lot, and often with some works which are not those of the Toulouse season.

Also it is interesting to notice that Nanette Glushak has been the company director since 1994- which is a lot of time compared to many companies (too often company directors tend to change quickly because of local politics, funding problems, etc.)

Thank you, Estelle, for this information. I notice, also, that Joel has posted on (thus reviving) an earlier thread about this company. You mentioned there that Nanette Glushak was formerly a dancer with NYCB and ABT. And I notice that Benjamin Millepied (NYCB) is going to be represented in the upcoming season by one of the ballets on a mixed bill. So a New York-Toulouse link clearly exists, just as a few years ago a brief Florida-Biarritz link was established when Ballet Florida when to Franced to perform Thierry Maladain's version of the Prokofiev Stone Flower.

The season you list here seems quite similar in number and variety of programs to most smaller regional and mediuim-sized city ballet companies in the US. So does the fact that the company tours to smaller venues outside of Toulouse.

I tried to Google a website for this company, including looking under the names Opera du Capitole and Balle du Capitole, but found nothing. Do they have a website where one might learn about the company, dancers, repertoire, etc.?

It would be wonderful if we could get some up to date reports on Marseilles, Biarritz, and other French companies which maintain at least a kind of ballet presence in their reps. The struggle between classical and its rival dance forms is one that is relevant to all countries nowadays. Sometimes it seems like the battle to preserve classical ballet in France (outside Paris) is almost lost. Is some kind of revival in the works?

Yes, actually it was his post which made me think about the Ballet de Toulouse and look for some information about their next season- so thanks Joel :crying:

Sorry, I planned to post a link but forgot. So here it is (but unfortunately, only in French):

the web site of the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse:

So far, the 2006-2007 season only is shown in a linked PDF file.

The 2005-2006 season is there:

Some pages about the ballet company (I don't know if they have been updated recently):

Well, I'm not feeling optimistic at all about ballet in France... Recently, the contract of the director of the Ballet de Nice (already a small company), Marc Ribaud, was not renewed, and from what I've read the number of dancers in the company will decrease quite a lot. And actually since I started being interested in ballet about 1992, the following companies have more or less changed from ballet to modern dance ("more or less", because they sometimes keep a few ballet works in their repertories): Ballet du Rhin, Ballet du Nord, Ballet de Nancy et de Lorraine, and to some extent Ballet National de Marseille...
