Dale
No, it's an All-Feld night, with the premiere, not only of his Diamond Project ballet, but the NYCB premiere of Intermezzo. Link to comment
Helene
And I thought The Unanswered Question was Balanchine's Ives ballet I've never seen Intermezzo, and I hope to read reviews about it here. Link to comment
Dale
Intermezzo was considered a good ballet (it was performed by ABT and Feld's own troupe) -- a bit of a Liebeslieder rip-off. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. Link to comment
rg
the confusion of UNANSWERED QUESTION at NYCB is quite understandable: the second section of balanchine's 1954 IVESIANA is set to the UNANSWERED QUESTION - the same music that feld used and that gave his ballet its title. (the same wording appears in the program for IVESIANA too, as the name of suite's second segment.) INTERMEZZO has its own cause for confusion: it was made by feld in 1969 for his own AMERICAN BALLET COMPANY - and later restaged by AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE in 1972 - w/feld in the cast of ABT dancers. the first cast in '69 was C.Sarry, E.Lee, C.Sterling, D.Coll, J.Sowinski, & A. Figuero; the ABT cast was: C.Gregory, C.Sarry, M. Paul, I.Nagy, E.Feld & J.Kage. Link to comment
Michael
In the Midsummer casting -- Interesting that Jennie Somogyi is going into Hermia but not dancing Hipolyta, which was one of her finest roles, she would just clear the stage, there was no one else quite like her in that. Apparently, at this point in her return from the tendon injury, she is staying away from jumping and Hippolyta -- at the conclusion of Act I -- is just this series of ever bigger stag leap jetees. What a makeover/transformation/adjustment for Jennie -- from her early teens (and, I'm told, even before that, as a little girl novice in class) she had one one of the most striking and athletic jumps you'd ever see. It's terrifying for any dancer not alone one who just returned from a serious injury. Link to comment
Leigh Witchel
Yeah - I remember when Michelle Gifford fell during that and was out the rest of the season. It's dangerous. Link to comment
carbro
The rest of the season probably wasn't much (and I don't mean to belittle the effects of the fall), as NYCB's custom is to present Midsummer's during the final week of the season. This year, it breaks the usual timing of setting Midsummer Night's Dream around Midsummer Night. Link to comment
