Dale Posted March 21, 2006 Share Posted March 21, 2006 ABT STUDIO COMPANY RETURNS TO THE JOYCE THEATER, APRIL 27 – MAY 6, 2006 Premieres by Benjamin Millepied and Seán Curran to Highlight Performances American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company returns to The Joyce Theater, April 27– May 6, for the first time since their triumphant debut there in 2004. They will join Ailey II and Taylor 2 as part of The Joyce’s "1-2-3 Festival," with the ABT Studio Company appearing Thursday, April 27 at 8pm; Sunday, April 30 at 7:30pm; Friday, May 5 at 8pm; and Sunday, May 6 at 2pm. The Studio Company program will include excerpts from George Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15, the New York Premiere of Seán Curran’s Aria, and a World Premiere by Benjamin Millepied. The Joyce’s "1-2-3 Festival" will open on Tuesday, April 25 with a performance featuring all three companies. Aria, choreographed by Seán Curran, a former dancer with the Bill T. Jones /Arnie Zane Dance Company, will have its New York Premiere on April 27. Curran’s work for nine dancers is set to a selection of Handel arias, recorded by Renée Fleming, and features costumes by fashion designer Charles Nolan. Aria had its World Premiere at the Stamford Center for the Arts in February of this year. The program will also include a World Premiere by Benjamin Millepied, a Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet. The new ballet, Millepied’s first for the ABT Studio Company, features eight dancers and is set to a selection from Niccolo Paganini’s Caprices for Solo Violin. Excerpts from George Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15, staged by Merrill Ashley, will round out the Studio Company program. This staging of Divertimento No. 15 was first performed by ABT Studio Company in Burlington, Vermont in September 2005. A post-performance discussion with members of the ABT Studio Company will follow the May 5 performance as part of The Joyce Theater’s Humanities series. American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company is a small classical company of 12 young dancers of outstanding potential. In its eleventh season, ABT Studio Company prepares young dancers to enter American Ballet Theatre and provides opportunities for the emergence of new and established choreographers and composers.
