Farrell Fan
For those who don't read the Sunday Styles section in the New York Times -- Andrew Kirtzman, a political reporter for WCBS-TV in New York, and Kyle Froman, NYCB corps dancer, were married on Tuesday in Toronto. I don't know how to post the link, but I hope someone will, because these days the Times marriage announcements are framed as cute short stories. Link to comment

Old Fashioned
Do same-sex Canadian marriages count in the US? Congrats to the happy couple. Link to comment
Leigh Witchel
I believe it depends upon the state, Old Fashioned, because of the Defense of Marriage Act. In NY, the state's attorney general, Elliot Spitzer, has stated publicly that the state would honor marriages from other jurisdictions. Link to comment
Ari
I don't think a marriage that is solomnized elsewhere but not recognized in a particular jurisdiction is entitled to the same legal protections as one that is recognized. For instance, insurance benefitting a spouse would not go to a same sex partner because the partner would not be considered a spouse under the laws of (in this case) New York. If a lawsuit ensued, it would be decided by the courts, not the Attorney General. Link to comment
Mel Johnson
However, New York State Anti-Discrimination Law would fall on the side of the couple, and if the AG decided to enter in amicus curiae in any suit, where he entered would indicate the state's further position. Link to comment
