I saw an ad in marie claire with a gent in a ballet cotume, he looked like a dancer, but could just be a model in tights.

There were scuffs on his shoes, makes me think it was a real dancer or a very good wardrobe mistress.

Somebody here mentioned Andris Liepa--so THAT was the person who interviewed Ulyana Lopatkina for a TV documentary in 1997! I do agree he's definitely quite handsome.

By the way, I think Ivan Kozlov (who's Lopatkina's dancing partner since last year) could be quite handsome if someone gives him a good hairstyling.

Edward, because he was a very handsome man in his youth, and carried it into his mature years. Besides, he's a great guy.

Carlos, because he has a ring on his finger and the two of them together are currently melting the polar ice cap. I know it's global warming, but you really have to see these two!

Grant, his recent performance of the Pas from The Nutcracker was beautiful. His handsome looks were complimented by his ability to make his partner look like everything was effortless. He enabled her to go for anything knowing that he was there. He was beautiful to watch, and made his partner look even better.

Zach, because he is one of our times most prolific dancers. He's been a principal with Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and now Pennsylvania Ballet. He can do anything, and he and his beautiful wife Julie Diana are exquisite jewels.

I thought the Bolle photograph OTT and compared to the other two photographs out of place. In fact, it did not look like the elegant prince I have seen on stage.

It's not out of place when you're talking about 'most handsome dancer'. That does not mean 'princely' nearly all the time, and could include candid photos as well as posed or photographed onstage. In the 80s, I saw Peter Martins on the street in white jeans, which was much better a way of seeing his handsomeness than in BlackGlama fur ads, in which he appeared (to underwhelming effect, IMO). In fact, I think Martins is one who does look better offstage than on. Of those 3, I'd probably take Gomes's as being the best, though, since the Bolle goes OTT but not far enough.

Bolle is featured very prominently in the December US Vogue (with Jennifer Aniston on the cover) in the magazine's annual 'theme' Annie Leibowitz spread. This year's theme is Romeo and Juliet, with Bolle as Romeo. Juliet is one of the models of the moment, Coco Rocha. According to the same edition, Rocha was 'discovered' at an Irish-dancing competition.

There is also a full page photo of Bolle in December's UK Vanity Fair (with Kate Winslet undressing for the Oscars on the cover). The photo is by Bruce Weber and Bolle embodies Weber's preferred aesthetic of gay icon-cum-Greek god.

I mentioned it on the Most Handsome Dancers thread, of course, where it did not seem to demonstrate it. Martins was very handsome when young, still not bad, but I remember first seeing this photo, opening a New Yorker, and thought it was awful.

rg--have you the late 30s photo of Graham in mink for furrier I.J. Fox, I just read about it in the McDonagh: "With her hat poised rakishly forward, she posed in front of a mirror displaying Mr. Fox's mink as pertly as anyone who had earned a badge of distinction".

if you mean a copy of the photo in question better than this poor reproduction from the Praeger edition of McDonagh's book, i don't have one.

the attached scan is from the insert of illustrations between pp. 150 & 150 from my copy of McDonagh's biog.

(my Popular Library paperback ed. of the same book also has this illus. but the pulpy paper is yellowed and the clarity of the photo worse is even than the one from the hardcover book.)

it's quite possible that this same photo ahs been reproduced elsewhere, but i can't recall ever seeing another.

Thanks so much, and my apologies for the trouble. I'd seen the photo in the book I'm holding at this very moment, but it hadn't occurred to me that that was an ad since he's in it, and I just read about it tonight. I wonder if that was a kind of ad done in those years, with someone else in it (in this case, the designer), or if that photo was the occasion, but not the actual ad that would have appeared in the magazines. The book does have some marvelous photos in it, and I wonder if at later periods the one from 'Deaths and Entrances' on the page opposite the Fox photo, might have been very effective as some kind of ad, perfume perhaps--it's gorgeous.

I know it shows enough to be considered by some as "out of place". Still, I can't think of it as being harmful in any case. I just thought of it as...edgy, risky and...beautiful. Then, I know it was enjoyable by many others.... I thought about taking it down, but then decided not to.
