AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE AND CASITA MARIA TO PRESENT DANCE ARRIBA! AT APOLLO THEATER, JANUARY 27

Paloma Herrera, Angel Corella and Jose Manuel Carreño Scheduled to Perform

12/30/2003 - American Ballet Theatre and Casita Maria will present Dance Arriba!, a benefit evening of performance in celebration of Latin culture, at Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater on Tuesday, January 27 at 7:30pm.

Hosted by Sonia Manzano (Maria from Sesame Street), the evening will include highlights from American Ballet Theatre’s contemporary and classical repertory, performed by some of its celebrated Latin artists, including Principal Dancers Paloma Herrera, Xiomara Reyes, Jose Manuel Carreño, Angel Corella, and Marcelo Gomes. Also featured will be an original tango-inspired ballet, created through the ABT/Casita Maria Make a Ballet program and performed by the children of Casita Maria. In addition, the evening will honor former ABT stars Lupe Serrano and Fernando Bujones, who will be in attendance. Proceeds from the event will benefit ABT’s Make a Ballet partnership with Casita Maria, the oldest settlement house serving the Hispanic community in New York City.

American Ballet Theatre’s Make a Ballet program is a sustained arts-in-education program, focused on the creation, production, and performance of an original dance piece under the guidance of ABT teaching artists. Through weekly lessons at Casita Maria, children are taught to successfully choreograph an original dance piece, build sets and costumes, and make administrative decisions. Make a Ballet helps students develop skills with life-long applicability while drawing on resources from regular school studies. In addition to performances in their communities, selected Make a Ballet students present their work during ABT’s annual Young People’s Ballet Workshop at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Benefit tickets for Dance Arriba!, priced at $250 each, include the sponsorship of four children to attend the performance. A VIP reception at the Apollo immediately following the performance will feature Latin cuisine and music and an opportunity to meet ABT’s dancers. For benefit tickets, please call ABT’s Special Events office at 212-477-3030, Ext. 3239.

Performance-only tickets, priced at $25-$45, include a $2 Apollo Theater facility charge per ticket. Tickets are available at the Apollo Theater box office or through Ticketmaster by calling 212-307-7171 or visiting www.ticketmaster.com/venue/6. Students with a valid ID can purchase tickets for $15 each.

The Apollo Theater is located at 253 West 125th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues in New York City. For more information, please visit www.abt.org.
