"He felt to stay would have been a betrayal of his principles. He told [the general director of the company], 'I know I let you down. But I wouldn't be able to live with my conscience if I conducted that [garbage]. The whole concept works against the music.' It wasn't easy for him to do this. He lost lots of money."
