    Joy Womack

It is unfair to assume that because her family is well off that they would be paying her way. I also doubt that her salary is equivalent to $100 US. Her apartment is quite nice and she seems to have everything she needs. I'm still dying to know why she can't get the pointe shoes she needs. Surely she is not the only ballerina in Russia who wears Gaynors? And why wouldn't she buy some when she visits home? My personal viewpoint is that Joy create her own problems. She does have a negative outlook on most things, it seems. But if your colleagues have asked you to stop filming your company class, I don't blame them. I would hate having my every move broadcast to the world. By the same token, she is entitled to her opinions. However, in her current situation, she should be keeping some things to herself. Russia is not the US. Everything there is so politically sensitive. Be smart and keep your mouth closed.
  2. The photos in the ad are horrible and obviously not taken by someone familiar with dance.
  3. I saw the announcement on PNB's Facebook, which linked to the company blog.

    Joy Womack

I would venture to say that Joy brings a lot of her problems upon herself. Calling her partner a drunk in a public forum is very unwise, even if it is the truth. And if one chooses to live in another country, one should anticipate that things will not be the way you are used to. What I have a hard time figuring out is if she is actually naive, or something else. I'm surprised that no one has yet brought up her attempt at hosting the first "BalletCon". She has sent up a kickstarter for $700,000.00, and when I checked last a couple of days ago, only $274.00 had been contributed. I feel so sorry for her. I will say her Prima Bars are delicious. I just had to see what they were all about, and I was not disappointed. Can anyone clue me as to why she cannot get Gaynor Mindens in Moscow? I mean, she cannot have them sent to her. I was told because they are made in America, but that can't be true, because she has other American things in her videos. She was just in Los Angeles, so why could she not have gone to a dancewear store and bought a few additional pairs if they are so important to her? Or have her custom order mailed to her parents or a friend, then packed them in her suitcase? Surely that could not be illegal?
  5. Kathryn Morgan also posted the news on her Facebook.
  6. Hi! I'm coming out of lurkdom to put in my .02 tonight. I was so grateful to have the live stream for otherwise I'd never get to see Carla Korbes dance. But the repertoire...Oy vey! I thought Dirty Goods was horrid, and an insult to the very talented dancers in it. That work needs to be shelved. The Calling--what was that? It was very pretty with the skirt all over the stage, but more of a theater piece than anything. Carla just stood there and posed. A complete waste of time. Rassemblement wasn't my cup of tea, either. It's a shame because Elizabeth Murphy is such a lovely dancer and I'd love to have seen her talent showcased in something that wasn't a barefoot modern dance. I love Emeralds and Diamonds, but Rubies, not so much. Am I the only person who detests Rubies? I can't stand that prancing step, sort of like emboite, but not, and the silly grin on the ballerina's face. It's so forced. (I'm not dissing the dancers, it's not their fault. Just my own opinion.) Serenade was exquisite! The dancer who knocked out those turns in the beginning! WOW! Who is she? I've never seen anything like that!
  7. Are principal dancers really paid well enough to afford Hermes? Holy cow!
  8. Does anyone know where Gabriella Hayes Moore is going? She's a local (to Salt Lake City) but I can't find anything on her.
  9. I love the authentically shocked expression on Gillian's face! Congrats to all the couples.
  10. For me, it was Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland. And it was my first time seeing live ballet, ever. It was wonderful.
  11. How wonderful to see all these promotions! But I am very sad to see the retirements, too. Especially Kate Crews, as she is a favorite of mine. I wish all the non-returning dancers the best of luck in their new endeavors.
  12. Just announced on ABT website: Sascha will be returning in January 2010!!!!
  13. I find it hard to believe that the very first time I ever attended a live ballet performance was at the Music Center in Los Angeles, and it was Giselle with Kirkland and Baryshnikov! How lucky I was. At that time, I did not know it, however. I was only thinking that I should be home studying for a math final. However, one detail I do remember from Act I, when Giselle is plucking the petals out of the flower for the "he loves me, he loves me not" scene, Gelsey hopped up and stood on the little bench outside the cottage, stage left. I've never seen another ballerina do that since.
  14. Thanks for sharing. The photos are just splendid!
  15. Other than the "Dance of the Blessed Spirits" from Orpheo et Euridice, what music comprises the score to Chaconne? I have tried to find it, but have been unsuccessful. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  16. My local PBS station aired this on Saturday night. Living in Utah, I was very grateful to see NYCB at all since it is doubtful I will ever be able to see this company live. I had read the comments here on BT before I watched, and was eager to see what I would think of it compared to what you all had thought of it. My first impression was that the sets looked like something from a high school production instead of a famous artist. I had seen Kristin Sloan's podcasts showing the behind-the-scenes preparation for the production, but nothing could have prepared me for how poor the set looked on the stage. Tempera paints, anyone? The costumes were so ROY G BIV I had to laugh. The poor dancers! At least I hope they were comfortable to dance in. They were just plain ugly. The choreography made me cringe at times, but that is not the dancers' fault. And of course, this is somewhat subjective. The dancers, on the other hand, were fantastic. Robert Fairchild is from right here in Salt Lake City, and it's nice to see a local boy do great in such a prestigious company. Very talented. Sterling Hyltin--where do I start? Her arabesques go on for days, and those feet! I think her feet are among the most gorgeous I've ever seen. I'm just not sure she's principal material quite yet. I thought she was perfectly cast as Juliet, but she's still very young and needs refinement. I know it will come with time. I must say the I was enthralled by the dancing in the Balcony PDD. But the abrupt ending after Juliet goes back up was weird. The Bedroom PDD was just weird with Juliet crying, and there was hardly any passion. And that sad little bed! Maybe it was supposed to portend the funeral bier that Juliet would later be placed upon? But if I had to sleep on that, I would be crying, too.
  17. TutuMaker, I finally found a copy of the magazine at the Barnes & Noble on 5300 S. State St. right across from Costco. I don't know where in SLC your daughter lives, or if she has found a copy by now, but I did want to get back to you about this. There is only one copy left. It is definitely worth getting.
  18. I think Kate Crews looks fantastic in that pose! This is a very exciting time for Ballet West. Everyone should check out their blog. Adam Sklute, the artistic director, is bringing in all kinds of big name talent to the company these days. I'm so thrilled to see the company blossoming as it has been since Adam took over. TutuMaker, are you in the SLC area? If I find a copy locally, I will post where I got it.
  19. I, too, felt that Tharp's tribute was too short. It was almost embarrassing, and certainly Tharp deserved more. But Marcelo and Lucia were stellar. I've never seen either one of them dance before, so this was a superb treat. He is so handsome and incredibly talented, and she is the perfect feminine counterpoint. Luciana, (to me, at least) bears a strong resemblance to a young Leslie Browne. I drank in every step with great pleasure.
  20. It seems like forever since ABT has announced any promotions. So far, they have added photos for Roberto Bolle and Daniil Simkin, and removed photos of dancers no longer with the company. But there are no new corps members or promotions. Certainly there have to be some shifting and/or additions. Anyone know when they make these announcements?
  21. As a local supporter and fan of Ballet West, I must give a shameless plug for their new blog. www.balletwest.org will get you there, and the blog link is in the lower right corner. The entire website has been overhauled, and it's got some great photographs of the dancers and rehearsals, and some of the costume shop, which I found particularly interesting. I'm really excited to see how the company is growing and attracting new talent, so please check out the new website and the blog. If you visit Salt Lake City, take in a performance if you can. The Capitol Theater is a wonderful architectural treat, and of course, Ballet West is wonderful, too!

    Whitney Jensen

There was an article about Ms. Jensen in The Salt Lake Tribune dated 8/14/2008. It turns out she is a native of Park City, Utah who now lives in NYC. At age twelve, she flew to NYC to train with Valentina Kozlova every weekend, and back to Utah during the week.
