  1. I think that the current costumes for the other 'girls' are very much in this vein, although shorter. They are among my favourites......I can see how this original design would have been lovely, but the costume that evolved, as so many designs do, was much more effective for Farrell and the choreography. Thanks for sharing this, rg--
  2. My guess was originally Minerva, but as an original design, not the one used now.....which is much, much shorter and less complicated. I think this one is fabulous!!!!!!!! Offenbach is the second guess, but this one isn't in the current production.........
  3. And if you've never seen this company do Tzigane: run......do not walk.......to that box office. They give 150% and the energy is exhilarating--
  4. This is her last season at ABT, so unfortunately, we have to get used to many years without VP Swan Lakes According to K. Ryan, the PR person for ABT, today: Ms. Part is returning to ABT. I can only suppose that in between the interview when she stated that she was leaving, and now, there has been a shift. I have seen nothing in print, but this is from today's intermission press room conversation......and Swan Lake's Queen is exquisite today.
  5. And kudos to Ms. Messmer! She did a beautiful job in the pd3 with Saveliev and Melissa Thomas, and really came out flying as a replacement for Part! I saw her jump and immediately pulled out my binoculars-- The entire performance was so rewarding ... I discount fouettes and the botched lift at end of Black Swan pdd, as those were just minor aspects of a really stellar performance by Ananiashvili and Gomez.
  6. On Gillian last night, the blue was beautiful with her hair and skin.....and then Carreno walked over in the pants.....The pants match the scenery perfectly, but the bright blue of that tutu.....eeeeuw. The tutu ornamentation is lovely (silver peacock feather patterns) but it's made from lycra/milliskin or some matte stretchy stuff that is firmly tacked to the tutu all the way around the outer edge, heightening the circus pinwheel aspect. Nasty. I loved the steel grey/oyster/abalone look of the previous tutu....they could have even gone with a more traditional lilac/lavender version. This blue was just wrong. Oh, the dancing was splendid!
  7. Don't think it's a Karinska, because of bodice construction and fit......but I especially enjoy her 'take no prisoners' expression. I can just imagine her in this pdd; she probably wielded that fan like an uzi.....
  8. "any BAISER fan hasn't ever read THE ICE MAIDEN tale i recommend it highly. it's beautifully told, even in the english translation of the danish that " I heartily second rg........ this is now readily available, thanks to the wonders of digitization of many library books......I read it many years ago (in my previous career as a children's librarian) and thank him for prodding my memory! (Do a Google search of Ice Maiden Andersen and there are quite a few hits.) Back to topic....
  9. Exactly. I could not believe that he posted this one. We'll have to wait for the Costas view.........
  10. This is not classical. It is not neoclassical. http://www.geneschiavone.com/gallery/v/Pri...SC1939.jpg.html In this current discussion, a picture is worth many words.....
  11. love your alternate titles ;) and review!
  12. Well, after La Scala, it was pretty much expected on Monday night.....and the reprise was even better than the first time!!! It was a splendid performance....
  13. There's an interesting show at the Zimmerli Museum at Rutgers University on now: Art for the Dance: Russian Costume and Stage Designs.... http://ebs.gmnews.com/news/2008/0306/Front_Page/017.html
  14. I bought them for the Tilson Thomas pieces. (I am a great MTT fan!) His Giselle is also a great favourite of mine (be warned: no peasant pdd)....
  15. Frequently, the search needs to be as simple as possible, in this case, "Talich Tchaikovsky"........ Mozartiana is here indexed as Mozartia. I bought the symphony/suite collection with Tilson Thomas as mine went missing after being lent out.... Librarians and professional researchers will always advise: simplify searches and assume that no one can spell.....I was happy that I didn't have to wade through all the possible transliterations of Tchaikovsky, frankly. Let me know if you are still unsuccessful and I'll send you the link via PM.
  16. These are all available on Amazon (click above) hint, hint.......
  17. Yes, thank you, Nanarina for your comments. I agree with sz that the Karinska tutus for Symphony in C provide a much more sprightly, youthful form and are quite lovely. You may be interested in the extensive discussions on tutus which are on Ballet Talk for Dancers, in the Pro Shop forum. Many of our contributors there are professional costumers, and some are very experienced in building tutus. You are correct in that there are many different shapes and methods of construction; quite often professional costumers can tell the costume shop 'signatures' just by looking at the slope of a skirt, ornamentation, etc. Please visit the Pro Shop--I'm sure you'll find it interesting and we would welcome your contributions!!
  18. I wonder when I will arrive at the point where I feel I've seen Serenade 'almost too much?' Unfortunately, I have two tickets for Sunday's matinee which I will be unable to use (second tier.) Email me if you'd like them.
  19. I'm still in the dark ages with my videocassette of this.....gradually I will upgrade, I imagine! It is a wonderful, wonderful performance...
  20. The "center man" was originally done on Gen Horiuchi, and is traditionally danced by a relatively small dancer. I would like to see De Luz in this role.
  21. Anthony Dowell. Vladimir Malakhov. Igor Zelensky. Henning Kronstam--almost forgot!!!!!! I am certain there are more.
  22. Now you all know how librarians feel at the end of every day.
  23. Why not Slaughter on Tenth Avenue? Thou Swell has those ridiculously expensive costumes--I suppose they have to be worn *sometime.*
