  1. By "sheath" I assume you mean a short, flippy dress in a soft georgette, chiffon or other fabric that moves. A soft crepe or georgette is appropriate, or a double georgette if modesty is an issue. You can use several layers of colours if the fabric is thin enough.....movement is key. Silk is best, and you don't need much so cost is not as much of an issue. Be certain to use AB crystals, rather than clear, as for this variation the illusion of moving light underwater is important. Classical tutus are generally not appropriate for pre-teenagers, unless they are unhooped, or short and fluffy. Colour is extremely important for competition. Pale blues into aqua.......you have lots of beauty to choose from, I would just stay away from strong or dark tones. I don't mean to sound dogmatic, but I've been costuming for many years--just my two cents!
  2. HURRAY! Well-deserved! One of the most beautiful backs and arms in ballet........congratulations, J'aime! xooxo
  3. That is the program. They are doing it every night.
  4. You'd think they could find a violinist in NYC.
  5. Quick fyi tonight re: Myrtha: Murphy out. Messmer in.
  6. I don't see the problem. Why wouldn't a mother want to hear about her grandchild, and that her daughter is excited about finding a life partner? Check the calendar...........last time I looked it is the 21st century. Yes, she is 29 years old and supports herself. What is the problem?
  7. It's been kicked-up a notch to Yahoo News: http://movies.yahoo.com/news/movies.ap.org/natalie-portman-wed-black-swan-choreographer-ap Will the wedding be before or after the Oscars, I wonder? Congrats to the beautiful couple - and they truly are that. I was wondering if the wedding will be before or after the baby is born. No one's business but theirs. Congratulations and good luck to them.
  8. RUN!!!!! Do not walk---to see this program. Brilliant. That's all I can say, as I have connection to the company, but the dancing was superb: nuanced, passionate, technically sound and Eight by Adler was vastly more enjoyable than I had anticipated........ Goes again tomorrow night @ 7:30. What a great afternoon!
  9. Thanks for the report, Jack! Happy to hear that the performance went so well after what must have been a very long bus trip from Washington to Buffalo! They are performing at SUNY/Purchase College on Sunday, so looking forward to it.....
  10. Eating chocolates from Charlie while watching the performance tonight....that would make anyone feel better!
  11. You might contact the box office at the Performing Arts Center (914-251-6200; www.purchase.edu) They should be able to help with logistics as audience members come from all over. As it is a Sunday matinee, the train schedule to Rye or White Plains may also be worth double-checking. Potential audience members from BalletAlert might consider car or cab-sharing, or group tickets if numbers suffice. Purchase is only about 45 minutes north of Manhattan and the Neuberger Museum (across from the PAC) is well worth a visit. A highly-anticipated event on campus.....
  12. There is a small, but proud, cadre of people who love this production and have from the moment it appeared. Welcome to the club!
  13. I'd love to see Cotillon, also Figure in the Carpet!
  14. 75. Being truthful. Nor counting Harlequinade pd2 and Harlequinade separately. Using Wikipedia as too lazy to get my books to reference dates.
  15. Perhaps he preferred it this way. He was out for knee surgery and not able to dance lately. Not everyone cares to have a gala/sendoff and I am sure the management of the company would not do anything against his wishes. It is a new direction for him and I hope he'll be happy in Washington......

As Michael says, the public housing in the area covers several blocks. Coming out of the Met stage door area or lower entrance, it is not exceptionally well- lit or peopled. There is scaffolding all around LaGuardia high school right now and it's very dark. I don't know where she is staying while in town, but there are not hotels in the direction she was heading. It is a very sketch area, and late at night there may not have been too many bystanders. As she is a guest artist here, perhaps management ought to arrange for a cab from the Plaza side, at least. There are many 'recognizable' people in the area, but midnight on Amsterdam & 64/65th is not red-carpet time..... Still, a very unfortunate situation and one hopes that it will be corrected by escorts or cabs from now on.
  17. Thank you! I haven't seen this photo before.... A few years ago the Nat. Museum of Dance in Saratoga had the original costume on display......I spent a very long time in front of it, of course! Many, many layers of beautiful, clever, and unusual detailing.....
  18. Elizabeth McGorian remains my gold-standard (Mother does not equal Frump)....but let's not forget the marvellously, deliciously evil Fiona Chadwick in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake........
  19. Not necessarily more carefree..... definitely more sophisticated! thank you so much for these-----
