  1. Irina Dvorovenko and Maxim Beloserkovsky will star as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier in The Northern Virginia Youth Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker" on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 at 2pm and 8pm at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, VA.

Tickets are $35.00 for adults, $25.00 for children, seniors, and military. Visit www.hyltoncenter.org and scroll down to Northern Virginia Youth Ballet on Nov. 29 to purchase tickets.

  2. I personally know Michael Shannon through mutual friends that went through the Bolshoi Academy at the same time. He's a very down to earth individual.

He's now director of the Royal School of Antwerp as mentioned and his latest protégée Katherine Higgins was invited to dance with the Bolshoi.

I'm always quite sad that people forget about him when talking about "First American to graduate".

  3. I've seen this in the programs at the Kennedy Center also. I saw Le Corsaire several years back and they had Novikova (She was only coryphee at the time) as a Principal and T. Tkachenko also as a principal. I think they look at who is dancing principal roles on that tour and then go from there.

  4. We are evolving and we want to go forward. At the Bolshoi Theatre it is difficult to be pigeon-holed… We want to dance as much as possible, especially new choreography. For artists, the size of the stage doesn’t matter, but the opportunity to perform and raise the quality of the performance.

    From Ivan Vasiliev's Facebook page.

  5. When the announcement regarding the replacement of Osipova/Vasiliev was announced, there was an audible groan from the audience. I was very taken by the opulent sets, costumes, and shipwreck. Shipulina didn't quite do it for me; arms flailing about, very forced acting, and as my neighbor said "well, isnt she full of herself". She is very striking when posed but looked very unsteady during turns and many transitions.

I'm a new fan of Nina Kaptsova! She was most adorable and really did steal the show.

Other highlights for me: The Odalisque pas, the Pasha, Eunachs, and the Jardin. I really felt for the girls going around the "grass" fairly blindly due to the width of their tutus.

  6. A bit off topic but somewhat relevent...I really dislike when people consider Imperial and Vaganova to be the same. Example-a local school advertises themselves as a Vaganova school. Then they go on to talk about how the Vaganova system created dancers like Pavlova, Nijinsky, Baryshnikov, etc. Umm...interesting how Vaganova trained Pavlova and Nijinsky as they're older than she. As a history buff, incorrect facts really get under my skin.

  7. I like its reference to the generation of WWII women who, unable to buy silk stockings, used to draw seams on their legs with makeup.
If the British situation comedy Are You Being Served? is to be believed, this was still a practice among ladies working in London department stores during the high-inflation 70s. The young saleslady learned it from her WW II-generation supervisor.

I thought of that episode just as I read Carbro's post....
