Here is a link from RT apr30 27min long dubbed to english. Has both Skorik, Fateyev, and Vishneva. Coaching and backstage life at the Mariinsky. From Oksana point of view. http://rt.com/shows/documentary/ballet-sweat-tears-mariinsky-628/
  3. I was a super for Act 1. Natalia, Ivan, Daniil and Sarah got the loudest and longest applause of the week. I watched from the wings and the ABT dancers were even yelling and applauding. The height of their jumps is just bigger. I did like James Whiteside as Ali on Friday.
  4. The KC program: This new production premiered at the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, Argentina Dec. 2011. It premiered at the KC Apr 11 2013 by ABT staging by Anna-Marie Holmes. Scenic design by Christian Prego, costume design Anbal Lapiz and lighting by Brad Fields. "Act III Scene 3: The Pasha's Palace The pasha is awakened by the arrival of Conrad, Birbanto, and the pirates disguised as pilgrims. He invites them to enter the palace. Medora recognizes Conrad, disguised as one of the pilgrims. suddenly, the pilgrims throw off their robes and reveal themselves as pirates. Chaos erupts within the palace. Conrad and his men chase away the pasha, his guard, and wives. They dance in victory. Suddenly, Birbanto runs in chasing Gulnare. They collide with Conrad and Medora. Medora exposes Birbanto as a traitor, and Conrad shoots him. Conrad's slave helps Medora, Gulnare, and Conrad escape. They flee to the ship."
  5. I will be a super with ABT again. We rehearsed with the company today and did costume fitting. The costumes and scenery are from Teatro de Colon. Had a great time watching a little bit of the company class. Roberto Bolle, Julie Kent and Danil Simkin are a joy to watch. The Class was taught by Nancy Raffa. She and Anna Marie Holmes conducted the supers' rehearsal. As a treat Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev were off to the side rehearsing. Ivan was in blue jeans and street shoes, but when the music for Conrad's dance started Ivan jumped in and gave the supers a small performance. We all clapped at the end. Also Damian Woetzel was there visiting.
  6. Yesterday I was taking a class taught by Alicia Graf Mack and at the end of class she said she wanted to get to know us. 20 of us in a circle, she goes into the center and starts to dance for us. Her extension and movement is just beautiful to watch up close. You can see she loves to perform and she won't disappoint if you pay to watch her. Well she runs up to me and pulls me into the circle, my turn. Yes I had to follow her performance.
  7. 2010 Joffrey Ballet brought their Nutcracker, last year was ABT and last time Ballet West was at the Kennedy Center was 2008 for Ballet Across America.
  8. I thought this was one of the best Nutcrackers I have seen. I guess since tonight was the closing performance the Rat King got some laughs by doing the gagnum style dance before fighting the Prince. The death scene also had some humor, one of the mouselings tried cardio resuscitation. My friends daughter was one of the youngster performing. She said they auditioned local kids from the area and were coached by Maryland Youth ballet mistress Rhodie Jorgesen. Her daughter takes class in Virginia and the Maryland Youth Ballet kids are busy with their own Nutcracker now.
  9. I watched the last 20 minutes of company class on the stage this morning. I don't know who the ballet master was, but she had the men practicing their their turns a la second, and barrel turns around in circle. For the ladies she had them doing pique turns, but dropping off pointe and then popping back up to pointe. That looked difficult. Also had them do 2 hops promenade into soutenou pirouettes en dehor. Then they had to clear the stage for setup. These young dancer were having fun backstage, you could tell they love to dance. During the prologue and behind the curtain, they would clap to the beats, mime something funny to the music, or dance out of the wings and back. I guess to ease any nervousness. When the curtain came up they were ready. ABT was serious and quiet backstage, POB was more laid back. They would sit behind the wing and watch their fellow dancers. This company felt more like a family.
  10. I am one of the supers for Giselle at the KC. There was much drama at todays matinee in the wings. After falling off pointe in the hops, as a true professional Dorothee gathered herself and came out for the mad scene. I was also able to watch Benjamin Pech rehearse parts of Bolero with his coach, even though they are not performing that here. All the POB dancers have been very friendly. I am having a great time trying to watch as much as they let me without getting in the way.
  11. I was selected to be one of four pages in act 1 for the Kennedy Center. We had a costume fitting and rehearsal with ballet master Laurent Hilaire. He mentioned there was a problem with the entrance of the royal entourage in Chicago and he might change it for us here in DC. I will be one of the pages who brings out the table and chairs for Bathilde. I am excited to be a part of this and will try to watch company class if they let me. Not bad for an old guy who saw his first professional ballet in 2004 Washington Ballets Giselle with Rasta Thomas.
  12. The free video player VLC has in it's advanced options the ability to speed up or slow down the timing of the audio to the video. I use this program to play all my video files and dvds. Here is the link http://lifehacker.com/367558/fix-desynchronized-video-and-audio-with-vlc Next week I will audition as a super for POB Giselle at the Kennedy Center. Wish me luck.
  13. I got to watch her rehearsing Swan Lake after company class today at the Kennedy Center. Herman Cornejo was helping her on Thursday. I don't know who was partnering her today. I did not recognize him.
  14. I was a super for Bayadere this week and had a great time wandering backstage where they would let me. We rehearsed with Victor Barbee on Sunday and on Monday with the props. The first time with the dancers Gomes, Part, and Abrera at 11am Thursday and then again with Seo, Muntagirov, and Boylston. This was my first time as a super, some of the temple priest had done it before with ABT in 2006 and some of the tiger men were teenagers from local ballet schools. It was fun seeing how the magic is done. You can feel Marcelo's power as he dances by you that close. The corps dancers were always nice and the lead ballerinas were beautiful on stage. I also was able to sneak a peek at the company classes before the performances. Some taught by Susan Jaffe and the others by Craig Salstein, both give corrections to the dancers, but Craig would stop them if they didn't do it as he wanted musically or a certain emphasis. This has been a great dance week.

  22. I attended the NYCB movement class Saturday morning taught by principal Daniel Ulbricht and corp ballerina Sarah Villwock. They both mentioned that they started out in gymnastics before beginning ballet training. How Daniel was one of four and Sarah was one of eight students when selected from SAB to be apprentices in their respective year. Also present were NYCB Orchestra pianist Alan, violinist ?forgot name? and NYCB education outreach coordinator Erin. The pianist mentioned he was using a score reduction actually done by Balanchine a blurry photocopy for our class. The Musicians also talked about the problems which occurred during the open rehearsal of 'Episodes' on Wed. Both Wendy Whelan and Ask La Cour had issues with timing the music. But they did great on Saturday. The class of about 25 persons ranged in age 16 to 65. Daniel led a warm up tendus and plies in center. We were in the Kennedy Center Theatre Lab stage no barres. The choreography were extracts from 'Square Dance' the same steps we would see in the performance later that day. Only simplified and at a slower tempo. This is the first time NYCB has offered a participation class at the Kennedy Center for non dancers. Daniel told me he did teach class on Friday at Maryland Youth Ballet and back in 2007 Ashley Bouder taught a class in Bethesda Maryland when NYCB was at the Kennedy Center, which I did take. Ashley has gotten stronger and she makes it look so easy. I loved watching her in 'Square Dance'. Daniel kept speeding up the tempo in class and we still never reached what they did on stage.
  23. While reading the article on Sarah Lane's pay there was a link to the other body double stunt double who did fight scene and some feet shots. This interview was posted in November. http://artsmeme.com/2010/11/21/meet-natalie-portmans-evil-twin-body-double-kimberly-prosa/
