  1. This may get me in trouble, but I have never liked Coppelia. I've tried really hard, but I find it hard to even care about why I hate this ballet. Maybe it's the characters. Except Coppelia herself, I can't stand any of the characters. The one scene I like is when Swanilda and friends sneak in to Dr. Coppelius' workshop and you have all those wonderful little variations. Other than that, I have a really hard time making it through any production of Coppelia that I've ever seen. Niamh
  2. I think the term "beautifully proportioned" still lends itself to personal interpretation as much as "preferred body type". None of my favorite dancers have what would be considered perfect or even favorable proportions. To the ballet world that is. To me, their proportions fit their style as ballet dancers and that's what makes them great. I think if I were to venture a vote for the most beautifully proportioned according to regular ballet standards, perhaps I would say Carla Fracci. Not too thin, not too big, not too long, not too short, lovely arms and neck and her face is just beautiful in structure (I'm a figure painter as well as needleworker, perhaps I concentrate too much on detail). However, my favorite female dancer is Karin von Aroldingen and yes, it was her unusual proportions that struck me as very beautiful and the way she used them even more stunning. So...conundrum? Niamh

    greetings

Greetings! I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself I am a needlework artist in upstate New York, so I get to make a lot of trims for ballet costumes and the occasional costume piece. I am a huge NYCB fan since I live near Saratoga I spent a good deal of time dancing as a youngster and I still do a bit, just because it's fun. Mainly, I'm just a huge ballet fan. Having read some of the posts, I have already learned quite a few things I didn't know and I'm looking forward to doing some more reading here. Thanks and have a wonderful weekend Niamh S.
