  1. It is very obvious when a dancer wears arch enhancers: first it deforms the foots natural curve. Where is the beauty in that? Many younger dancers use these enhancers, in class or auditions and are told very boldy to remove them. I know some professionals who use them, and again it takes away the natural beauty of the foot, it makes them look awkward and you begin to wonder what is wrong with that dancers feet, instead of the beauty of the movement.

  2. I know many ballet dancers with tattoos, while it is a personal way to express themselves, they cover them up with body makeup during performances. On stage you would never know they had them, and when the costume comes off, you would be amazed at how many they have: arms, legs, backs and chest. I do not mind tatoos, but I do think it takes away from the performance and artistic look the dancer is potraying, if it is not covered up with body makeup.

  3. Having attended all of Sarasota's Performances thus far, I find it very refreshing to see sold out shows and on a few Performances the addition of an extra show. I applaud the Sarasota community for its wonderful support of the arts and to Sarasota Ballet for it's continued excellence and quality. Bravo...to Iain Webb and Sarasota Ballet.

Sarasota Ballet starts season with a power trio of performances

No sophomore slump here: Sarasota Ballet opens its second season under the direction of Royal Ballet veteran Iain Webb with a powerfully danced and exuberantly performed trio of selections from the top shelf of the modern repertoire.

Webb's dancers are performers in the truest and best sense. They project an irresistible joy in what they're doing, even if it's expressing heartbreak, as in Antony Tudor's "Lilac Garden," the artistic highlight of the new program.

Seen in dress rehearsal and again last night at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts, "Lilac Garden" shows off the company's emerging gift for narrative ballet.

Like Frederick Ashton's "Two Pigeons" from last year (it will be performed again this season), "Lilac Garden" brings to the fore the dramatic talents of its leading ballerinas -- the indispensable Lauren Strongin and Alison Dubsky.

Last year, the women were superb as two points of a doomed love triangle in Kenneth MacMillan's "Las Hermanas." In "Lilac Garden," each is in love with the other's partner, which gives them both cause for some exquisite suffering in the shadowy light of a full moon.

Strongin, with her expressive upper body and beautiful Vivien Leigh face, is riveting, all swoony confusion; Dubsky, in commanding extensions and dazzling footwork, seems more angry than sad.

  8. Swan Lake was a bitter sweet performances for the Central Florida area in that it was Caitlin Valentine's last performance. She is an amazing dancer and left everyone's jaw opened in "AH", both in artistry and technique, as well as multiple graditute from the audience. I personally am sad to see her and Chris Ellis go to Colorado Ballet next season, they are getting a "gem".

All of the Swan Lake performances were great with each cast bringing something different to the table, all were received with warmth and appreciation. The whole cast was outstanding not a dry eye in the venue, with the mix of trainees among company, it makes you wonder which is which. This means wonderful direction from our Trainee program to intermix and no one can tell the difference.

Next year Orlando Ballet has another full slate with the addition of Orlando Ballet II and with a great season planned. They will perform in Tampa bringing four ballets along with the five ballets slotted for in Orlando.

  9. I want to give a huge BRAVO to Orlando Ballet for a wonderful season ending performance of Swan Lake. It was well received from the Central Florida area with standing ovations nightly. This was a truly quality performance from the staging, to the lighting, all the way down to the corps, which involved many of their trainees. Diane Hubbard with the Orlando Sentinel gave a great review of the performances. After these highly acclaimed performances, Orlando Ballet showed that they are truly a quality company and school.

    BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO...
