  1. Well, it happened!! The gala event has come and gone, and I will let CarolinaM give you the details when she gets back on the site since she actually attended it (I haven't yet checked to see if she has openned a new thread with the info... so, OK, I am a little slow about this forum stuff!! ). She and I met the morning after for coffee, and for me there didn't seem to be a lot of really new information, but we DID happen to meet Ángel's father just outside the Angel Corella Dance Store next to the Teatro Real. When I inquired about whether Ángel would be missing the first Madrid auditions due to his dance schedule in Chicago, he affirmed that Ángel would be at ALL the auditions, even the Saturday morning one, and did not seem to be aware that there was a "schedule conflict" (nor is there any private jet!!)....perhaps he will change his performance schedule with ABT in Chicago????? As you can see, not all the details are yet clear, so keep watching for updates as things become more concrete!! I was very disappointed that none of the major national newspapers carried anything about the gala or the project--a sad commentary on how much Spain (at least the Spanish press) is clueless when it comes to ballet and this, their own shining international star. Luckily, there were at least 3 or 4 smaller regional papers that had great articles online about the event and the project. As reported, the Angel Corella Foundation expects to work with an estimated 10million € ($13.3) budget, 6 for the new company and 3+ for the school. As for the school, set to start for the fall of 2008, the general reaction to the announced cost of attending it among ballet forum folks in Spain is one of dismay and shock: 35,000€ (something like $45,000) is the annual fee! However, it was stated that no child with the right physical conditions would be left out because of the money... the family would pay according to their ability, and scholarships would cover the rest... so that this would not be a school solely for the wealthy/elite. What does a boarding school dedicated to the arts cost per annum in the US? Anybody know? I guess that is about it for the moment-- hope this is useful for you all!
  2. Thanks, Helene for the info and for a way for a new member like me to "get connected"!!
  3. CarolinaM, I can hardly wait to hear your news. As for the press conference, do you know which media will be there? And a general question of protocol : is it "OK" to connect personally with each other somehow via this website? As an example, since I live in Madrid, I think it would be neat to meet you CarolinaM (if YOU would like to), when you are here for the Gala, but I don't want to do be out of line with what is allowed in the exchange of personal information on this site.... can someone please advise? THANKS!!
  4. Thanks Carbro!! If indeed AC dances the night of March 23 in Chicago, he probably won't get a flight until the evening of the 24th--unless of course he has a private jet whisk him away after the performance directly to Madrid!! I suppose all things are possible. Even then, it would beimpossible for him to make the 1st morning auditions that Saturday. Perhaps his foundation staff would do the preliminary culling, and then have him only see and select from the narrowed field.... Does that ever happen in auditions? I am still a little green about how all this audition process works!!
  5. CarolinaM: ENHORABUENA!! Congratulations on your invitation!! I, too, will look forward to hearing all about what goes on and the report you give!! I hope it will also make major news in the national papers, too (not just "METRO" and "20Minutos" and the other free ones...). It is about time the printed media got more on the ball with promoting this new push for classical ballet in Spain. 4mrdncr: What is the thing you referred to about "Chicago" and the upcoming auditions in Spain?? I seem to have missed something about AC's scheduling challenges....
  6. .....Oh well, after reading the newest news on Angel Corella's website, the Gala is a "private" event for the media, "institutions", and private businesses, whatever all that may actually include. In fact, the date does not even figure in the calendar of events for the Teatro Real, although it is indeed to be held on the 16th of February--an "empty slot" between two opera performances in the theatre. So, we "fans" will have to wait for the news in the press or other media. That's the latest in Madrid... at least with regard to AC. Now I would like to find more about Tamara Rojo's project.... Anyone have anything????
  7. Thanks, carbro, for the heads up on what to post where!! I'll try to remain the fan here, and do my "parent thing" there. In the meantime, I've got the bug to get info about the February gala, hopefully attend and get some firsthand info!!
  8. Actually, I am American but have lived here for almost 17 years and feel more Spanish than American anymore--my dancing daughter, although she was born in the US, presents herself as Spanish to her Indiana University ballet classmates since culturally she IS. She was only 2 when we moved here, and she would dearly like to come back and dance in Spain, if not Europe. so, I agree: let's hope that the Madrid area and the rest of Spain can sustain 2 world-class classical companies!! I'm all for it!! :huepfen024:
  9. So nice to see I am one among others participating on this site from Spain , where we are getting excited about the 2 new classical ballet companies in the process of being born! I am already a member of BalletTalk for dancers, being the mother of one who did her training in Spain, but somehow I was not aware that this was a separate site from that one. So I am glad to be able to participate in both. Hasta luego!
  10. CarolinaM, Do you happen to know that if Angel's school and company are aimed at giving SPANISH dancers a chance to stay in Spain not only to train, but also work professionaly, are NON Spaniards being considered for the auditions for the company? Will Spaniards who are dancing abroad have priority in the selection process over non-Spaniards? My daughter, with the exception of one year in the US, grew up and has done all her training in Spain, (grado elemental in Zaragoza and grado medio at the Real Conservatorio in Madrid). She would have loved to stay here to dance when she graduated from the Conservatory and Bachillerato last spring, but we all know that's been nearly impossible here in Spain and will continue to be so until these companies get going. For the Ballet Master who watches this thread: is there any way you can link some of this information over to the ballet talk for dancers? About a week ago I saw some questions on this topic on that site, so I thought I'd try to get some info and googled my way to THIS site--I didn't realize they were separate!! and I am not sure I could find my way back to what topic it was that was discussing Angel's and Tamara's company projects in Spain.
