  1. So now it looks like that all is ok at the Peralada's web page. http://www.festivalperalada.com/eng/2010/p...o/a811miami.htm Many thanks to all BalletTalkers. It will certainly be a very special event that of Peralada with such a great dancers all together. Summer Festivals in La Costa Brava are really a must as for instance this year we also will have Joaquín de Luz at El Cap Roig and Lucia Lacarra at Porta Ferrada.
  2. Yes, and just returning from CB he got the following review: http://www.ballet.co.uk/magazines/yr_10/ma...ballet_0310.htm His last performance with CB was in Barcelona beginning this year and it has been a very moving farewell as he was very loved by all at the company and audience.
  3. But... if I’m not wrong there are two male dancers winning this year, the second being David Hallberg! Does anyone know who won as best choreographer? Congratulations to all winners and also, of course, to all the nominees!!
  4. Thanks for telling cubanmiamiboy! It seems that Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami has sent a not very accurate info about their guests, because they also mentioned Adyaris Almeida as member of the Cincinatti Ballet which was not as she is with Corella Ballet Castilla y León from the very beginning. We told them about and after checking they ammended the error. Does anyone here know where is Rolando Sarabia dancing now? Maybe it is again a wrong information and we could ask them to put it right.
  5. Boston Ballet latest visit to Spain was in 2007. In Catalonia they performed in Peralada La Sylphide, and "Classic Balanchine" with Serenade, Who cares? & The four temperaments. This year Peralada offers us the Miami Classical Ballet Boston Ballet will this time be in Barcelona at the Coliseum. A pity as the stage is not very large. According to Boston Ballet web page: http://www.bostonballet.org/Press_Releases...SPAIN_TOUR.html
  6. They will be in Peralada this summer. http://www.festivalperalada.com/eng/2010/p...o/a811miami.htm I will not miss them!!!
  7. Oh yes indeed, Corella Ballet is our Company!! and me too want to see their D.Q.!! It would be great but I still have to see their Lake. Here there are two more reviews: Corella brings his Spanish charm to New York stage By JOCELYN NOVECK, SF Chronicle http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?.../e142119D85.DTL and The new Corella troupe makes a promising international debut By Robert Johnson/The Star-Ledger http://www.nj.com/entertainment/index.ssf/...pe_makes_a.html Many thanks to you all here who have shown interest and have let we Spanish people know how things have been going on in NY
  8. I just can't understand this 4mrdncr, I really can't. I'm really eager to see it and I'm very grateful to you to have undertaken such a big deal. Have you tried to get something, publicity, presentation at cinema festivals (Valladolid), etc... in Spain? Maybe now as the company will perform in NY there will be a chance for you to make it more known.... Good luck!
  9. I’m so happy CB will be performing at City Center!! Hope many of you here will be able to attend and will report. For you to see a bit how the company looks like: http://dancemedia.com/v/3454 And there will also be a photo exhibition by Manuel de los Galanes with the collaboration of the Corella Ballet dancers at the City Center Hall. March, 17th - 20th. For more info you can check the Corella Ballet web page http://www.corellaballet.org/home2.html I’m also linking two articles published in the media: http://www.playbillarts.com/features/article/8327.html http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/dance/...-leon-interview I hope it’s ok, if not, of course, please feel free to move/delete them as you consider appropriate. Enjoy our brand new company!!
  10. I'm sorry to read this 4mrdncr I can't imagine why, really can't as I know how hard you've worked and how good your documentary looks. In fact I also wanted to explain a bit about CB' Swan Lake and about the Spanish situation as far as ballet and dance are concerned. Last year they announced the creation of a new Classical Ballet Company directed by Victor Ullate. Also they said that Nacho Duato would have to leave the CND by next month of July. But the ministry of culture was changed and now they say that what they are going to do is to turn Duato's to a Classical Company. At the same time it seems that there is a cummulated budget for the new company they foresaw to create of about 1.260.000 Euros . Article in Spanish http://www.larazon.es/noticia/2248-1-26 ... et-clasico Why they don't leave Duato's as it is given the great work he has made during the 20 years he has been in front of the CND and they give the money devoted to classical dance to Corella Ballet? In still not two years of existence CB has been able to stage a great Bayadère and at the end of the month they are presenting Swan Lake. Even knowing that Angel will not dance at any of the shows, tickets for the four evenings were sold out the very same day they were put on sale. The company already has a name, dancers are well known and admired: Herman Cornejo, Adyaris Almeida, Ashley Ellis, Fernando Bufalá, Natalia Tapia, Joseph Gatti, etc., etc., are very beloved by Spanish ballet lovers. Here it is the link to the company for further info. http://www.angelcorella.org/home2.html You will soon have the chance to see how the company looks like, I'm really excited about them to perform in NY and also eager to see their Swan Lake in Oviedo. Will see what government decisions will be.
  11. I truly think that's a pity that they are joining Víctor Ullate as the repertoire there is only Ullate's, Lao's and a bit of Béjart (rarely performed though). Ullate has never been a classical dancer. He is an excellent teacher but all the great Spanish dancers who came from his school and left have confessed that they really learnt classic when they joinend a real Classical Ballet Companies. On the other side, Ullate's son, Josué, a very tallented young dancer, has joined the Cuba National Ballet for one year. At Christmas, the BNC will be performing Nutcracker in Valencia but I don't know if these so amazing Cuban dancers will join them for these performances.
  12. The "Manifiesto" is now on line in English too and it will also be in French soon. David is gathering a lot of signatures. Many great dancers from all over the world, all the great Spanish ballet stars, and many people that has nothing to do with dance but love this art or have had the opportunity to see the company one day are joining. Yesterday I went to the theater where their Sleeping Beauty was performed. It was at the matinee, full of children, my granddaughter, 4 years old, spent all the ballet long very concentrated and liking every moment, as we did us, because it is about a very imaginative version, adapted to the small size of the company but with great audiovisuals and high dance quality. Also at the newspapers there are letters and comments published (available on-line) against the Ministry decision and against the cultural politics of Catalonia that only gives support to contemporary. Really hope that they are going to be able to survive....
  13. What I can add is what Ángel mentioned me some weeks ago in that already mentioned interview: Corella Ballet will be performing end of January in Barcelona at the Coliseum, with the same program they premiered at the Festival of Peralada this summer.
  14. Chance for private funding are really few. Some weeks ago I interviewed Ángel Corella for a Catalan web site and this is what he told me: the interview was published in Spanish but it was kindly translated by Karen Over for a board devoted to Ángel Corella. In Catalonia the sole patron Corella Ballet has is TOUS a Catalan jewellery company. So not much hope from this side. David Campos will for sure keep on fighting –he is doing it since so many years by now- but he really doesn’t deserve this continuous lack of support.
  15. Many thanks to all of you here for your words about the difficult moments David Campos' company are facing. Yes, it is the sole company in Catalonia and one of the very few in Spain using classical technique and pointe shoes. They are now performing at the Teatro Romea in Barcelona with tickets sold out nearly every night. They rent the Liceu (as at our “Gran Teatre” they never wanted to program them) and even with nearly no publicity the theatre was full. They were only asking for 18.000 Euros, sooo low amount (David really does miracles!). They accomplished and even surpassed all the due requirements to get the 2009 support and now the government denies it. One has also to remember that Aleix Martínez, the winner of Prix de Lausanne 2008, came from this ballet school. Good and hard work together with creativity that is not recognized neither in Catalonia nor in Spain. Signatures are gathered. Nearly all the dance community all over Spain seems to be supporting them. Forums, FaceBook, Dance Boards... everywhere… I for sure will keep you posted and I thank you very much for your kind attention to this so incredible and sad news. Also thank you for any support you could give. I also take the opportunity to point out (as it has also been mentioned by Bart) that Corella Ballet has seen how their subsidy has been decreased by a 10% from previous year while the former Spanish Culture Secretary had promised them a quite important increase. There is only room for the cinema in Spain now and dance as always is the one suffering most You can see an excerpt of their latest work "Sleeping Beauty" at the end of the "manifiesto" (link included by mom2) and their Nutcracker never failed at Christmas.
  16. At City Center in addition to CB's performance schedule there is a discussion and demonstration by Angel and some of the Company Members. This will take place on March 15th at 6:30 PM at City Center's Studio 5 - 130 West 56th Street, 5th Floor. Tickets are $15, General Admission and will go on sale, September 8th, the same day as the tickets for CB's performances. City Center's website and calendar has also been updated. Here's the link to the page on the March 15 discussion/demonstration.
  17. Vassiliev seems to be from another world, I had never seen what he did that day at D.Q. pdd. But I can not give you an accurate replay as I have not seen him dancing a whole ballet. He can be “winning” in terms of virtuosity, there is nobody doing what he does, but what about interpretation?, charisma? I’m afraid that without the help of the government (any but with funds enough or willing to fund them enough) it would be very difficult to survive. The amount they are receiving from both the Spanish and Castilla y León governments do not allow them to look at the future with the tranquility they should. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think that they need to be supported by a richer community. Also a clear support from the Royal Family would help the company very much. Furthermore, do not forget that Ángel first wish was to settle in Catalunya, this is why I’m still keeping on fighting and will never stop as far as I think there is a little hope. I think it will, at least according to this article String Sextet is on the program for the City Center in March 17 - 20. Thanks!! I too agree with you that the popularity of the story is very convenient. I didn’t know that it has not been staged since so long. It surprises me as it is really, really, nice. Maybe CB will also bring it at C.C. Thanks a lot! As I told, I think that their future depends on receiving more funds and support from important organizations. And, as Catalan and because I know they would have liked it very much to be in Catalonia, I still have hope for that to be done. We are many in Catalonia doing as much as we can. I have nothing against them being in La Granja, as far as they exist and are able to survive but I thing that it’s not the best place to be, at least not for the Company. Thanks also for your interest in a report at fotoescena but it will be not, I’m afraid, not about Peralada at least. ---------------------------------------- Yes carbro Thanks! I saved my replay yesterday and I'm attaching it as it was. I'm on holidays and have very few conection here, everybody using the wifi I guess and very difficul to post.
  18. Corella Ballet Castilla y León, premiered in Peralada three new works. The first one was Ángel Corella first choreography, String Sextet. The sole string sextet composed by Tchaikovsky is a score full of melodies, harmonies and charming rhythms, inspired by the beautiful city of Florence. Corella’s ballet is structured in four movements. I truly think he has a great future as choreographer. I loved it very much and find it very new and musical with very innovative Port de Bras and Portées. I liked the way the Corps was organized, the Pas de Deux he has created for his principal dancers, and of course his solo. Principal dancers were Kazuko Omori and Yevgen Uzlenkov (first pdd), Carmen Corella and Ian Mackay (second pdd) and Adyaris Almeida and Fernando Bufala (third pdd). It is about a ballet full of energy, with influences of Balanchine and with very beautiful dresses. I do not know who the designer is. It seemed to me that one could recognize different ballets on it but under a different approach. I specially loved Adiarys Almeida and Fernando Bufalá, part, he is so musical! They were both so great! And Ángel’s solo was amazing. Audience, even knowing him and his incredible way of dancing, got astonished. The pity is that I’m pretty sure they did not have enough time to rehearse because one noticed some mismatch at the Corps, very young dancers all of them, but with time it would be a very beautiful ballet. I discovered Christopher Weeldon’s, VIII. This was my preferred piece of the night. So elegant, so real, Carmen Corella, was so moving. One felt her pain and despair when noticing his husband abandoning her by a charming Ana Bolena (Adiarys Almeida). Ian was a great and handsome Enrique VIII, he was on stage all the ballet long, with his so fine bearing, bringing to the role the emotions of that so well known king’s history. And what I liked it very much was the divertissement danced by the three amazing Fernando Bufala, Kirill Radev and Yevgen Uzlenkov, together with Kazuko Omori. They brought moments of fresh air on that daunting atmosphere. The Corps was here at their top. Perfect lighting, very beautiful dresses too and an imaginative staging. And finally Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free, I guess you all know this ballet (probably VIII too) but it was never staged in Spain. I think that Ángel got very famous when just arrived in NY dancing the role of one of the sailors, the one that in Peralda was danced by Herman Cornejo (uuauu, how good he is!). Ángel danced the second, the ingenuous one, and Ian Mackay (who danced the three ballets) was the last one. Girls were Adiarys Almeida, flirting and funny, Asley Ellis who brought her high class behaviour on stage and Carmen was the last one, the one who makes the three sailors leave the stage running after her. After their Bayadère at the Liceu, with exquisite dancer Alina Cojocaru as guest star partnering Ángel Corella, Catalan audience could realize what they have lost. This company should be hosted in a community as Catalunya and in a city like Barcelona. They showed that they deserve this and Catalan ballet lovers too, as we are many. We still are dreaming that one day our politics will understand how much this company could bring in many aspects. I do not know if this could still be possible but I do not stop to dream about it and fight for it.
  19. Hi Sunday! Although I’m not participating very much -I’m very busy with fotoescena in my already so few free time- it’s nice to « see » you here! and I’m truly astonished for what you have been able to learn about ballet in such a short period of time. Also I have to say, what a great English level you have! As for Víctor Ullate, well, the National Ballet Company the former Ministry decided to create, seems not to be a priority of our brand new one, so, for the time being, it seems to be in stand-by. Welcome again and see you tomorrow!
  20. It’s a shame that Spain has not joined Europe in the celebration of this centennial. The INAEM has rejected since 2006, several projects The company spent seasons in Madrid, Barcelona and San Sebastián. Also king Alfonso XIII was one of their sponsor. But at least the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona has scheduled the ENB with their program Homage to the Ballets Russes on the centenary of their foundation. If you visit the link you can see the posters announcing their participation in years, 1917, 1918, 1927 and 1928 I’m happy that I will be able to participate in a way
  21. I also love to see Ashley Ellis dance!! She is so great at Clear!! She is my preferred one on this choreography!
  22. The government announced the creation of a National Classical Ballet Company by the end of this year that will be managed by Víctor Ullate. Tamara Rojo will participate as well as member of the assessment committee. These are changing times as far as dance is concerned in Spain and some decisions do not seem to be really appropriate
  23. Exactly, we Spanish ballet lovers were asking for a classical ballet company from long ago so we are deeply grateful to Ángel Corella to have fought for so long to create one, which now it's an amazing reality with top dancers and a very nice repertoire. Some months ago the Ministry of Culture announced the creation of a National Classical Ballet Company which will be created from the one of Victor Ullate's: Ballet Víctor Ullate-Ballet de la Comunidad de Madrid. Víctor Ullate is not a classical dancer and doesn't know the Classics. He was a very good neoclassical dancer and knows very well Béjart's style where he was principal dancer for many years. He has also been a good teacher, some of our best classical dancers come from his school but all of them clearly have stated that they learned about classical repertoire and how to approach it when they have been abroad. Ullate was the first director of the National Classical Ballet Company 30 years ago but was fired. One thinks that they would better have left Víctor Ullate with his own company of that neoclassical style which we have admired many times, and created a new Classical Ballet Company studying many projects from all people willing to direct it. This would have been better. But of course, supporting the company that already exists and we all are proud of Corella's having already said that he didn't want to direct a public company if the contract obliges to leave after 5 years. Spain is so big, has so many empty theatres, Real, Liceu, Maestranza, Palau de les Arts, etc.. so many good dancers dancing in top companies all over the world that can for sure host at least two Classical Ballet Companies. Yesterday a new Ministry of Culture was appointed, somebody who has a deep background in the film area so one things that dance will not be her priority at all. How will this affect the decisions recently taken by the former, no idea, but I'm afraid that we can't expect much. I really hope that Corella will get support from the Ministry as he has already demonstrated what he is able to do. As far as the Benois are concerned I honestly think it's a shame the way the presentation of Ullate and Lao has been manipulated and also I'm a bit surprised that Lao's choreography is so well known to be in that list.
  24. Even if the name is the same, no, these prizes are not given to formula one stars yet In 1948 Alicia Alonso together with, Alberto Alonso and Fernando Alonso founded the Alicia Alonso Ballet, today's Cuban National Ballet. Fernando Alonso received last year an honorary prize for his artistic career. What I've noticed is that there is some misunderstanding about the Spanish Ballet Companies. The National Classical Ballet doesn’t exist yet in Spain and the Ballet Víctor Ullate and Ballet of Madrid are the same. Víctor Ullate and Eduardo Lao are both working at the Ballet Víctor Ullate/Ballet of Madrid. This company will disappear as soon as the announced new company "National Classical Ballet of Spain" sees light. Seems a bit odd as it's stated mainly if one is Jury and the other Nominee. I hope the organizers have taken this into account because it might be a conflict of interests there. Another thing that surprises me is that Mr. Lao’s choreography “Tres” has not been much represented… Anyway good luck to all participant and ¡qué gane el mejor!
  25. I've just seen this topic and can tell those still interested about this dancer career that she is indeed dancing with the Nürnberg Ballet, managed by Spanish choreographer Goyo Montero who premiered end of last month Romeo and Julia. Jaione was Juliet's mother and appears in at least one of the images in the photo gallery: Website of the Staatstheater Nürnberg / Romeo und Julia
