  1. That's gorgeous Simon. Thanks for sharing.
  2. Great idea! I hope he takes a camera crew...
  3. I will be very interested to hear what he has to say about his Nutcracker journey when it is complete!
  4. I LOVE this Nutcracker story book idea! Genius. It's so easy to flip through the pages, the photography is beautiful...I especially love the picture of Gillian Murphy on the Thank You Notes page. She looks gorgeous! This story book gives you all the information that you want to see and provides cute, homey details like the dancers' recipes. It really gives you the feel of reading a book, but better. Whoever came up with this story book idea...
  5. Personally, I think it would be very, very difficult to manage an AD's or a Dean's position as a part-timer while still performing in another city. I can't imagine how anyone could do it. The time demands would be enormous and exhausting. Much luck to both of the dancers in New Zealand...it really sounds like a dream come true! The best thing that happened from the Ballet Pacifica "situation" was becoming acquainted with the lovely and talented Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner. They are such wonderful teachers and occasionally hold master classes and privates in the area and are warmly loved by all their former students.
  6. Interesting article, thanks for posting. My daughter has learned a Napoli variation with all the beats, and it's quite beautiful. I'm really looking forward to seeing Napoli at OCPAC in May!
  7. That's one righteous rant! And she sounds like a very smart lady who obviously has blood, sweat and tears invested in the company. How very sad, I hope things work out in the end. All the best to her and the company.
  8. Wow, I love Lopatkina in Swan Lake and would love to see her perform with POB. I SO wish I could go!
  9. [ Oh, I should note that Festival Ballet Theatre is located in Fountain Valley CA, not Anaheim. It is right on the border of Huntington Beach, if people are more familiar with Surf City, USA
  10. FBT's performances of The Firebird & Mixed Repertoire was wonderful! I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy The Firebird that much, but Nikolai Kabaniaev's choreography was really great and very exciting, and Jade Payette's performance was excellent. All the dancers did a great job and the costumes and sets really set the mood too. Molly Lynch, Viktor Plotnikov both had contemporary pieces and Pas dAction from Laurencia was set by Yuri Fateyev, Acting Director of the Mariinsky Ballet Company. Ms. Lynch's piece was beautiful and elegant and V. Plotnikov's Oops was a delight. Laurencia was a great Spanish partnering piece. These fall shows that FTB puts together are always fun for the variety of pieces they put together. The crowd really enjoyed the performances and standing ovations were awarded the performers!
  11. Nikolai Kabaniaev choreographed The Firebird for Festival Ballet Theatre in CA this summer. The performances were stunning. I'm sure he will be a great asset to the Kirov Academy.
  12. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the nation’s most successful dance troupes, said on Wednesday that it would entrust its future to Robert Battle, a 37-year-old outside choreographer who has had a long association with the company. Ailey announced Mr. Battle’s appointment as artistic director, to succeed Judith Jamison when she retires in June 2011. He will begin working at Ailey this July in tandem with Ms. Jamison, who will become artistic director emerita when the transition is complete. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/29/arts/dance/29plan.html?hp
  13. Hi Bart, I think it's very interesting that San Francisco Ballet must be able to track my visits to their website and now whenever I go to various websites or blogs which have nothing to do with the artistic world, beautiful ballet pictures advertising their performances show up. I usually would be bothered that I was being tracked (by a cookie or something) but because I love these ballet pictures and it would otherwise be advertising I wouldn't pay attention to, it definitely gets my attention. I think it's very effective because I have very seriously considering traveling up to San Francisco to see some of these performances. It probably isn't very expensive advertising either...I don't think it costs much to run an ad on a blog. It seems to me to be a very useful tool for advertising for the art world since most of its patrons would typically be internet users. Anyway, food for thought. In fact, if people on this board didn't mind, it seems to me a perfect place to run some of these ads. You could earn some money to pay for the site upkeep.
  14. Smokey the Bear was in the first Nutcracker? !!
  15. I didn't see the performance but I love the costumes! And what a review from Macaulay....not a negative remark at all! Kudos to NYTB!
  16. I've seen a few hairpieces fall off in Nutcracker performances, but that is usually restricted to young students and their moms who haven't figured out how to keep them tightly on their heads with hair pins! By the time they're intermediate to advanced, most ballet students know how to keep those items attached! (It's embarrassing to have happen ) I have seen a heavy jewel fly off Gillian Murphy while doing turns, I believe it was an earring or perhaps a bejewelled hairpin, because I can't imagine any of the jewels on her costume landing with such a thunk! I've seen lots of makeup on costumes, especially face powder and lipstick which usually doesn't show on stage due to the lights, but usually costume ladies can clean the costumes if necessary. Also, I saw Diana Vishneva start bleeding from her knee on stage during Romeo and Juliet, if I remember correctly. At her next exit offstage, she returned seconds later with no blood showing! Amazing. Quick change of tights or makeup put on? I don't know, but it was very fast and I was very impressed.
  17. For those interested in seeing up and coming talent, Festival Ballet Theatre is hosting its inaugural dance festival showcasing these exciting ballet dancers. The San Francisco Ballet Trainees were fantastic when they came and performed this fall, so I am expecting no less for these dancers also! There is only one performance on Friday, May 7th at the Barclay Theatre in Irvine so don't miss out. Ailey II will perform: Isba (excerpt), choreographed by Alvin Ailey; Splendid Isolation II (The Calling), choreographed by Jessica Lang Houston Ballet II will perform: Blue (excerpt), choreographed by Stanton Welch; Long and Winding Road (excerpt), choreographed by Stanton Welch Festival Ballet Theatre II will perform: La Vivandiere, choreographed by Arthur Saint Léon; The Animated Frescoes excerpt from The Little Humpbacked Horse, choreographed by Saint Léon/Petipa and select YAGP finalists and award winners will perform a variety of classical and contemporary pieces.
  18. I agree. One striking thing about the Osipova Saturday matinee at OCPAC last month was the presence of so many Russian-speaking audience members anywhere you walked in the lobbies and their enthusiastic unison clapping during the performance. They were missing at the evening performance with the fourth-string leads. Word seemed to be out among the Russian immigrant community in LA (which is huge) that Osipova was the one to see. Nobody should be surprised to see the same phenomenon in New York. Yes, the Russian community has really grown here in So Cal! Over the years I have realized that opening night is usually always the performance you want to see at OCPAC. As far as I can tell, they always place the most desirable dancers on opening night.
  19. How cool is it to see a ballet by Tudor that hasn't been performed in decades? Wish I could see it...but just a little too far to go! And I love the behind the scenes video...the internet is endlessly fascinating.
  20. What a wonderful piece on FBT's Don Q! Thanks for posting the link California. Marcelo Gomes is just as charming in his interview as he is on stage....I can see why he's so in demand as a dancer these days. And Gillian looks absolutely gorgeous. Way to go Salwa on a wonderful production and giving your students so many wonderful opportunities! I'm very interested in this Dance Channel TV... apparently it is by a former Bolshoi Academy student named Arsen Serobian here in Southern California. I really enjoy the clips he has put together with an "insider's view". He obviously has an artistic eye as I think his pieces are quite beautiful. I really must keep an eye on that website as he seems to be really producing a lot of material, it will be interesting to see what he is able to do with it and where he takes it. I would love to see him do a long film on some company, I think it could be very good.
  21. Twittless? Can we copyright that? Too funny! I have to admit I'm not very fond of twitter myself....
  22. Thanks ginasf for taking the time to write that review! I was wondering how Van Patten was in the role. It's wonderful that both ballerinas brought a great quality to it. It sounds like SF Ballet did really well with The Little Mermaid in ticket sales and the crowds certainly must have liked it what with all the standing ovations I read about in the reviews. Someday I'd like to go see The Little Mermaid, now that I'm prepared for what I'd be seeing!
  23. Here's a clip from the opening night performance with Osipova/Vasiliev on the site www.dancechanneltv.com if anyone is interested in seeing some of the clips of an apparently phenomenal performance. http://www.dancechanneltv.com/video?v=ag4l2DQgslFkU
  24. I was cleaning out my car this morning and I happened upon a postcard advertising www.dancechanneltv.com I have no idea where the postcard came from, perhaps out of one of the programs from the Bolshoi Ballet's performance of Don Quixote at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, but I don't know. I am viewing the channel here this morning and I think this channel has a lot of potential. It has videos and a livestream...featuring right now The Orlando Ballet (not live)... and it does have advertising, which in my opinion is a good sign, because perhaps the site will actually survive with some money coming in. Perhaps they will have full length performances in the future via the livestream feature or full length videos. I really don't know. Anyhow, it looks like an interesting site to keep our eyes on. It has a clip from opening night of the Bolshoi's performance with Osipova/Vasiliev which I will post over on the Bolshoi's link on this site.
