  1. Why the name change of Tzigane to Errante?

From the NYC Ballet web site: "Originally titled Tzigane, after the name of Maurice Ravel’s rhapsodic score, this ballet will be revived for the first time in more than 30 years with a new name – Errante.  Choreographed by Balanchine for the legendary ballerina Suzanne Farrell for the 1975 Ravel Festival, Farrell will return to NYCB during the 75th Anniversary Season to stage the work for a new generation of NYCB dancers."

I moved back to Europe a few years ago and haven't been able to go to the NYCB in so long, but have kept following these conversations with great interest. Hearing you all rave about Mira Nadon is having me *this close* to booking a flight to NYC 😄 Gosh how I wish I lived closer. All I get are excerpts on social media, which are great, but with all your reviews, I want more!

NYCB, please tour in Europe (and take Mira with you)!

The company will be in London March 7-10, 2024, if that’s convenient for you.

FYI they've opened 3rd ring at least for Jewels.

And the seats are just as expensive as those in the 2nd ring. Rows D and E are not even available. When is the company going to realize that not everyone can afford $82 (or more) + service fees for a decent seat?

I just got off the phone with the Koch Theater box office. Here’s the story on the priority tickets for September 19 and October 11, the only two dates I was interested in. Only the Orch, 1st, and 2nd Rings are open. I ordered one $50 and one $92 ticket, both in the 2nd Ring. Seems reasonable. Then the sales person told me there would be a $12 service charge on EACH ticket! That’s obscene. I could maybe understand charging a service per order, but per ticket? I’ll take my chances going to the box office in the future.

To close the loop on my ticket purchase, I went back online tonight and was able to easily purchase one ticket each for opening night and the 75th Anniversary and was charged only $4 service fee/ticket. Whatever glitches and/or misinformation that existed earlier in the day when sales first opened seem to have been corrected. I was surprised that there were any tickets, let alone decent tickets, left for these dates and wonder if NYCB will keep the 3rd and 4th Rings closed. How sad that is, if they do.

I just took a look at my renewal. My $38 standard sub seats are in Second Ring D and it looks like they are still $38 plus a service fee. I tried to add another sub and 2nd ring D was not an option. The least expensive was 2nd ring C at $551 or 68.88 each for a 8 performance standard sub (this may include the service fee).

So it may be that they haven't raised prices on those 2nd ring D seats, but are not making those locations available for new subs. Not happy about that, but its less upsetting than to think that they're doubling the price of the cheap seats. Theoretically they may still be available for something like $38 as single ticket purchases.

The third ring is closed to subscriptions! According to the customer service person I spoke with today, everyone who had 3rd ring subscriptions was moved to the 2nd ring.  The new seats chosen for my two 3rd ring subscriptions are in the C price section ($73) of the 2nd ring and are much more expensive than my 3rd ring seats. The very patient customer service lady said she would put in "change" requests to move me to D priced seating for the two moved subscriptions but that will put me in a seating "queue" where selection will be subject to availability. It infuriates me that this company has so little regard for subscribers. Is their plan to reduce the capacity of the house to orch., 1st and 2nd ring seating and eliminate the subscribers with low-priced subscriptions hoping that they can sell those seats at full price as single non-subscriptions tickets?

and some of us would go, but when the pricing leaps from $38 for a few horrible side view seats straight to $80 for seats that are still quite lousy, we don't bother.

Closing the 3rd (and 4th ring) so frequently might make the house look fuller but what it means in practical terms for the audience is less affordable seats.

My Third Ring subscriptions are grandfathered in and I don't intend to lose them. I routinely get a call a few days prior to each performance telling me I've been upgraded to the Second Ring because the Third Ring is closed. Today, when I got the call, I suggested that they leave the Third Ring open and sell the seats for $25 each. I can't believe it would cost the company anything more than a few ushers' wages and some printing costs.

Another Covid-era adjustment:  no live singers for snow as far as I could tell; sounded like piped-in singing over the orchestra.

I was told on a tour that the vocals for Snow are created with a Moog synthesizer. I’ve never seen singers in the pit for Nutcracker.

It was great to be there. More than Serenade, the jolt that comes from a beautifully-executed Symphony in C was what I really needed. I wish they were doing more of that, and less of Serenade, this season. Joseph Gordon looked great, with more spring in his legs than ever. I was praying there would be no speeches, so my heart sank when Whelan and Stafford came out. Mercifully it was short and sweet. I totally didn't understand the "Waltz of the Flowers" interlude. Did they need extra time for the costume change? Or are they trying to drum up interest for Nutcracker? I could have done without that, especially since it was already getting long to sit with no intermission. The curtain went up 20 minutes late as it was, why add to the time before we can stand up?

I thought the orchestra should have played Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September”. After all, it was a memorable 21st night of September. 😘

Do you remember, 21st night of September?
Love was changing the mind of pretenders
    While chasing the clouds away
    Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing
As we danced in the night
    Remember
How the stars stole the night away, oh yeah

  11. I feel so sorry for ticket buyers who come to this production expecting a full-on Swan Lake with beautiful sets, gorgeous costumes, and good storytelling. I imagine they are so disappointed and certainly are not likely to return to NYC Ballet for another show of any program.

What are all those initials on the bells..? I think I might had seen AD for Danilova, LK for Lincoln K. and GB for Balanchine. Am I wrong..?

In an Instagram post on May 26, Alastair Macaulay explained the initials on each bell. I can't copy his text so check it out on IG.

  13. Did you notice the casting for the last day (June 3) of the season? Cameron Dieck gets to retire making his debut (!) in Agon and reprising his role in The Four Temperaments.  Savannah Lowery retires dancing Concerto Barocco and Agon. Should be a lovely day at the ballet.
